Mary Kelly has done it again! Oh, the sleep I lost. I could not put this book down. At many points I just wanted to shout, "Get a grip! Wake up! Really!" Just one word describes MY SON. DELICIOUS!

A journalist with a talent for emotional exhibitionism, Elaine promptly launches a column in her popular Sunday newspaper. It's called "Bastard," and it's all about our man Charlie. He can't blame her, really ("If there had been a fork in the road at any point in his life, then he hadn't noticed it," Charlie admits). But he can deeply resent, feebly refute, then finally come to terms with her wrath. Proves he's earned all this fans

What I like about these Byliner publications is that you get what feels like a whole book in a short or shorter read. I've been following all this publisher's releases since I read the Krakauer story on that pretender philanthropist Mortenson. I don't really know Nick Hornby's work -- my daughters do. All I knew was that he's well loved out there, popular, and in this short story (which is what this is, by the way), he proves he's earned all his fans -- he's a lively prose stylist, a terrific humorist with great comic timing, and a really fine observer of human failings, men's and women's. You get the whole breadth of this guy's life here: his failed marriage, his wife's large-scale assault on him in the press (what an exercise in humiliation!), how stuck he is in a job and a way of living, and how helpless he is against all of it, at the end of the day -- and the story is still funny. Highly recommended from this reader, new to Hornby. Plus, you'll feel a whole lot better about your marriage, I bet.

Everyone should read "Bastard"

This story was a lot of fun, and Hornby does a great job fleshing out a character in a short amount of time. Much like his other writing, it's rare to find a page without a few great lines. The idea of an ex writing a tell-all column is a great premise, but it could have easily been wasted had Hornby made the main character a good guy who was simply being libeled by his ex, but it's much more interesting that he is sort of a bastard. He's not a worse person than everyone else, but he's certainly not perfect, and that's what keeps the story interesting.

As a man married to a journalist who often writes columns about her life, I guess this could also be a cautionary tale for me. For Hornby fans, or anyone looking for a fairly light but entertaining half-hour read, "Everyone's Reading Bastard" is a bargain.

Charlie gets divorced from Elaine and, suddenly free of her ex-husband's presence, Elaine begins writing about Charlie in her weekly column titled "Bastard" published in a national newspaper. And, much to Charlie's horror, she is writing about everything - his bad habits, his sexual performance, his parenting faux pas - everything she hated about him and their marriage. And now everyone can read about it!

Nick Hornby's struck upon an interesting idea for a story but it quickly becomes clear why this became a short story and not a novel - besides the setup, nothing much happens. Charlie is publicly shamed for being an inattentive lover, a less-than-brilliant father, and a philanderer, but otherwise the concept doesn't advance much beyond the column being published each week and Charlie being embarrassed every time. And then it ends rather abruptly.

I thought the scene where Charlie and Helena, the victim of a competing column written by a vengeful husband called "Bitch", awkwardly get together in a hotel room one afternoon was funny, and the story is amusing enough for the most part. But it's not up there with Hornby's better short story efforts like the brilliant "Otherwise Pandemonium" and "Not a Star".

My daughter died

This book helps me better understand some of the following. My teenage daughter started drinking diet-colas with aspartame, and soon after she started having seizures. That lead to an eternal stream of medications and their side affects, including blurred erratic speech when to many pills were prescribed. She kept drinking that stuff. I begged her to stop. She moved on to bi-polar depressions and screaming rages. When she was in her 30s, a Harvard professor, who created Epilepsy.com, told me 'aspartame definitely lowers the threshold for seizures'. More begging. I couldn't get her to quit. Addiction, I guess, like cigarettes and alcohol. She became evermore mentally unstable. Simultaneous care from a neurologist, psychiatrist, and psychologist. She received government financial assistance. Finally I felt guilty at feeling relieved when she died in her late 30s, with no quality of life left. 20 years of suffering. Two car crashes with my grandchildren in the car. Tears. Pain. Death for my daughter. At one time she was so lovely and happy. She gave that drink to her grandson. He started having rages in the classroom and at home. The father, grandmother, and me, the grandfather, took control with constant adult supervision. My wonderful grandchild never had another rage after no more drinking aspartame in the diet-cola. No more car crashes with adult supervision and her not being alone with the children. I so wish as a young parent I had been able to understand what's in this book. I'll never understand why the FDA allows aspartame to be placed in 1,000s of food and beverage products. I could ramble on, like this, in tears, for such a long time... need to go think about something else.

This book was authored by a scientist who initially fought aspartame approval by the FDA. He reveals how aspartame was quickly approved after Pres. Reagan appointed Donald Rumsfeld to the cabinet. Mr. Rumsfeld was the head of the Searle company who invented aspartame. Shortly after that , aspartame was approved as a food additive. He shows how the increase in Alzheimer's, MS, autism, breast cancer, and several other diseases coincide with the release of aspartame in sodas. This book is a must read for anyone who is concerned about the increased rates of Alzheimer's ,breast cancer , lupus,and all these other diseases of civilization.

Couldn't put this down- all yellow highlighted- Truly & expertly explains in very logical science a great deal of our modern medical problems & the culpability (to the point of criminal) of major government agencies & their collusion with Pharacuetical/ big business companies-- If only I had had this info before I was drinking Diet Coke @ day & using the ditto machine as a teacher 1968-2002-fortunately I was an elementary music teacher- which limited my use of "ditto" to printing programs couple times a year- there was a time when I thought I had MS- had some of symptoms- + a breast cancer scare from a false mammogram - was advised to stop caffeine pop drinks- completely stopped drinking all pop 15 yrs ago- the severe dizziness/ eye weirdness went away-

You're Sober...Now What?

Dr. Berger uses his long experience as a practicing therapist to integrate recovery theory (Wilson, Larsen, Tiebout) with important research in psychology (Milgram, Frankl, Satir), to illustrate key concepts on how to maintain and strengthen emotional sobriety.

Although Dr.Berger’s approach is consistent with a 12 Step approach, he is not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom discussed in the rooms of recovery. Indeed, some of his ideas are so original and thought-provoking that I found myself pondering (and agreeing with) key points days after finishing the book.

Although the book addresses issues in recovery, it would also be of interest to a broader audience. His writing style is clear and direct. He uses stories and patient narratives to illustrate key concepts, so his points are easy to understand even to readers not in the recovery community. In fact, I have purchased and given this book to friends, and received very positive feedback. It seems Dr. Berger’s approach is effective not only to people in recovery, but also, to all of us who suffer from the human condition.

I found this book very helpful in recognizing the pitfalls that are there even after I worked the 12 Steps. It listed 12 problems that commonly arise, such as thinking that meetings are all that is needed to stay sober, confusing acceptance and surrender with passivity. One of the hardest things I have dealt with is finding my "true self" instead of my false self. This book offers insight into 12 pitfalls that commonly need to be dealt with.
I highly recommend this book and it's companion " 12 Stupid Things That Mess Up recovery".

Coal accounts for approximately one quarter of world energy consumption. Of the coal produced worldwide, approximately 65% is shipped to electricity producers and 33% to industrial consumers, and most of the remainder goes to consumers in the residential and commercial sectors. The total share of total world energy consumption by coal is expected to increase to almost 30% in 2035.

This handbook describes the challenges and steps by which electricity is produced from coal and deals with the challenges for removing the environmental objections to the use of coal in future power plants. New technologies are described that could virtually eliminate the sulfur, nitrogen, and mercury pollutants that are released when coal is burned for electricity generation. In addition, technologies for the capture of greenhouse gases emitted from coal-fired power plants are described and the means of preventing such emissions from contributing to global warming concerns.
