Excellent Resource Focused on the Psychology of Human Sexuality
By Michael Ioerger
The Psychology of Human Sexuality is an outstanding textbook that provides a cutting-edge approach to understanding sexuality through a psychological lens. It is the only introductory-level textbook I have come across that primarily focuses on the psychology of human sexuality. Many college-level human sexuality classes are taught in Psychology Departments; however, these classes often focus on the history, culture, biology, physiology, health, social, developmental, and deviant aspects of human sexuality, without really addressing the psychology.

Pros:
- Every chapter draws connections to psychology and highlights its key role in sexual experience and expression.

- This book takes a very integrated approach. It focuses on broad subject areas (i.e., Attraction, Gender and Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation) and discusses the primary factors and theories associated with each of the topics in addition to the psychological phenomenon associated with these subjects. For example, the chapter on Sexual Orientation discusses definitions, statistics, measurement, and theories associated with sexual orientation and its basis, but it also discusses sexual prejudice and the impact of sexual prejudice on sexual minorities.

- Justin J. Lehmiller's academic background in studying a diverse array of sexual and romantic relationships shines through in his sex-positive, inclusive approach to sexuality, making this book feel much less hetero-normative than most human sexuality textbooks.

Cons:
-This textbook is strongly focused on the psychology of sexuality, so it may not be appropriate for a class that is geared more towards understanding the biology of sexuality and reproduction. This type of information is addressed in chapters on:
- Human Sexual Anatomy
- Human Sexual Response
- Sex Education, Contraception, and Pregnancy
- Sexually Transmitted Infection and Safer-Sex Practices
- Sexual Dysfunction and Sex Therapy
However, the focus on the nuts and bolts of the biological aspects is much more condensed than other books, and pretty much every thing is couched in drawing connections to the psychological components of sexuality.

-Developmental aspects of sexuality and sexuality are interspersed through out the book, but there is not a specific, focused treatment of sexual development.

A collection of the latest research in the subject
By maryann borg cunen
I used the book for two years with an undergraduate class of mostly psychology students. I enjoyed the fact that it takes a psychological approach...this is much lacking in other textbooks on the subject. However it was too detailed in some topics, and heavy going on the whole. The resources that went with the book were inadequate.
