This is dark comedy is a classic that I read in college some decades ago and am re-reading in a German-language refresher course. An English version of this play, titled "The Visit" also was produced on Broadway many years ago.

I loved this play. It's entirely in German, so probably best for intermediate learners who want to expand their vocabulary, or native speakers. I found it highly entertaining and amusing. A great book which I kept even after I was done with the class.

Surprisingly Readable

Being an armchair historian, I found this work to be highly readable and entertaining. The bibliography is exhaustive (about 100 pages), as one might expect, and their are numerous maps and genealogy tables. Despite numerous authors, it does not backtrack nor contradict itself. For a scholarly work, it is impressive for its contribution, compactness (yes, even at 1,000 pages, it could have been 1,000 more) and ease of reading.

That said, it's not for those unfamiliar with the "story" of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. It more or less assumes you're quite familiar with Suetonius, Cassius Dio, Plutarch, et al, and various long standing controversies in interpretation. So if you've read a few books on the subject, you'll be quite comfortable with this work. If you've read the Routledge and Yale Press Imperial Biography series, then this work helps with context, providing the latest (and perhaps alternative) views on current scholarship.

Don't let the price scare you off. It's well worth several other books one might consider, combined.

Excellent tool for young elementary-aged children, perhaps younger

One of my daughters struggles with managing her emotions. When her father and I started the process of divorcing, I picked this book up and added to my twins' bookshelf. When I received this book, I was initially disappointed by its simplicity. My daughters were in kindergarten, but reading at a 3rd grade level; I thought that the presentation of the book would be too simple to hold the interest of the one with anxiety challenges. Boy, was I wrong.

At age 5, she read through the book from cover to cover. She didn't end up doing any of the drawing activities in the book, but she couldn't stop talking about the levels of emotion the book presented. She came up with a long list of situations in which she felt a "1" (was happy and calm), a '3' (was agitated and starting to lose control) and a '5' (felt like she had no control at all over her feelings or her body).

We still deal with her feelings of anger, frustrated perfectionism, and feeling misunderstood. This book has helped, though. The other day, she picked some wildflowers (weed blossoms) and placed them in a cup on the windowsill. No fewer than 3 times, our cat pulled the flowers out the cup, and strewed them across the floor. My daughter because extremely frustrated with the cat. She lectured her to no avail and then, without prompting, retrieved this book from the bookshelf, read it all the way through, and then picked up a blanket and retired to her room with another book. No tears. No yelling.

NOTE: Neither of my children are on the autism spectrum. They are also academically precocious, socially competent, and generally happy and outgoing. One of them gets into what I call "worry spirals" where a small concern balloons into full panic.

Giving Children Strategies

I bought this for my 5-year-old son, and I thought he would throw it across the room, because he often rejects my attempts at "talking through" his anger. But he was fascinated and seemed quite relieved to have been given a strategy to help himself. He often speaks in terms of feeling like a "5" or a "3". It is, for me, a helpful context for understanding his moods. That night, after we first worked through the book, he wrote me a picture and a card saying, "Thank you, Mama. I love the book." I am now about to check out some of the other books by this author. Although these books are published by the "autism- asberger" society, or some such organization, I think it is invaluable for any child who struggles with feelings that feel too big...

Great BOOK!

My younger daughter, now 8, has developed an anxiety disorder and won't talk about whats bothering her. Today, she would not get out of bed or eat because she was so anxious her entire body was hurting her! I went and got this book out of my home library and read it to her, I had no idea what a huge step that was going to be! She is happily up and writing in the book, she has now read it several times, and declares "the book helps me", it brings tears to my eyes watching her happy and not suffering. This is the first time I have actually written a review, but I felt this book and what it has done for my daughter is worthy.

As it happens I wrote this book back in 1994. Every now and then I'll find a copy for sale on Amazon for $1 or $2, so I'll grab a copy to give to friends. Obviously a lot has changed since 1994, but, even if I say so myself, the book covers a lot of aspects that we see in today's Internet; I think it is a useful history of the Internet. So if you are a buff for yesterday's tomorrow, grab a copy. (Don't worry; I'm not making money off it!)

Lola Ridge 1873–1941 Lola Ridge was a poet and champion of the working class. Politically active before socialism be came fashionable among New York intellectuals, Ridge participated in protests, marches, and pickets with ferocious spirit. Throughout her life she suffered illnesses, eventually dying of pulmonary tuberculosis in 1941, yet her writing is vigorous and electric. She was, as Peter Quartermain described her in the Dictionary of Literary Biography, "the nearest prototype in her time of the proletarian poet of class conflict, voicing social protest or revolutionary idealism."

Good book, but a new edition is needed

I use this book (and one other book) to help me teach an undergraduate class in Language and Technology. The book surveys multiple topics in digital discourse (e.g., games, multi-modality, texting, social media, etc.), providing relevant terms and definitions in each chapter. Hence, it is accessible to undergraduate students. Moreover, the authors present a useful framework that a reader can use to analyze his/her use of digital technology. Unfortunately, since the book was published in 2012, it shares common problems with other books that deal with technology. Some examples and technologies discussed in the text are no longer relevant. Likewise, some of the visuals in the text are outdated. I do appreciate the chapter summaries that support the text; the online resources are adequate, but they're dated.

A must for your library

Abner Chou (Editor), WHAT HAPPENED IN THE GARDEN, Grand Rapids MI, Kregel Academic, 2016, 301 pages.

It was with anticipation that I looked to and wanted to read this book. In recent years a renewed effort among evangelicals questions the historical reliability of Adam, the garden, and the fall. The book reasons for the importance of the beginning chapters of the Bible; it is foundational for the whole Bible and the reliance on theology to life itself. This book answers the issues and defends the orthodox view of these three chapters of Genesis. It is a work by the faculty of The Master’s College. In light of the allegations by some evangelicals in the recent debate, a new defense is necessary.

The book is divided into three sections. These sections deal with the historicity, theology, and scientific elements of the revelation of these chapters section by section.

Section 1: Reality of Genesis 2-3. This is divided into four chapters. In this section the foundation of the book is being laid. Chapter 1 deals with Hermeneutic and History in Genesis 3. Abner Chou does a good job of identifying the issues involved. The issues revolve around exegetical issues; issues of history and theology, which he identifies the thesis that history is the ground of theology. It is the way theology works. He debunks the mythology view. Chapter 2 and 3 (by Todd Charles Wood and Joseph W. Francis), deals with Adam and the Animals and the Genetics of Adam. In regard to Adam and the animals the authors make clear Adam was a product of special creation in the image of God, and for the purpose of dominion over the earth. They deal with this in contrast to evolution. They bring out the distinction between humans and the higher forms of life in the animals (i.e. apes). Creation of kinds can be distinguished. We need to recognize the difference between as well as within evolution and creation. They continue to examine evolution and creation with a chapter of Genetics of Adam. In this chapter they argue for the young earth model of creation and history. This chapter is one of the most difficult for understanding of the problem and not reader friendly. However, they do show their intended purpose that evolution is not the only way that changes in the human race could take place. Chapter 4 is on Map of Misreading’s (by Grant Horner). This chapter brings us back to basics, which is understanding the text correctly. This is vital for it is the core of understanding of the Bible, theology, and its practice. He suggests that the text is not the problem; it is in the explanation of the text that misreading occurs. Because of our sin, our tendency is to explain away, de- historicize, and misread Genesis 3. We must read the text features as a story, told simply and clearly, meaning exactly what it says.

Section 2 deals with Theological Ramification of the Creation and Fall. This section contains only two chapters. First is Genesis 3 and original sin by Paul R. Thorell. He approaches the subject in what I would regard in reverse order—beginning with the historical church view; to Paul’s view of Genesis 3; back to the prophets; and ending with Pentateuchal context. All the areas uphold that Adam’s transgression had universal consequences on his posterity—sin, death, and judgment. The second is on the Seed and Schaeffer by William Varner. Francis Schaeffer advocated that dualism of history (lower story) and faith (upper story) strongly influenced religious thought. That faith does not need some objective verifiable events in space-time history. He views Schaeffer’s philosophy in the context of Genesis 3. Varner upholds the Messianic promise of Genesis 3:15, and the reality of Adam and Eve as historical. One needs to read this chapter on Genesis 3:15 in regard to the promise.

Section 3 is the largest section of the book. It consists of seven chapters. The section deals with the reality of sin and its effects upon this world and mankind. Each chapter looks at the fall through different lenses. R.W. Mackey deals with three effects on Human enterprise (Chapter 7). Taylor Jones has an excellent chapter of the effects of the curse through the lense of thermodynamics (Chapter 8). This chapter will speak to those that have a orientation. For those of legal minds, George Crawford looks at the legal aspects of the fall (Chapter 9). Ernie Baker through the line of psychology (Chapter 10). Jo Suzuki deals with the subject through the lense of the topic of gender. Alexander Granados of the importance of the Historical Adam in education and our Christian curriculum. John MacArthur concludes this section by upholding the doctrine of original sin.

The book centers around the important and vital issues of Genesis 3 (mainly). In light of developments in theology, history, and the world events. This book is timely and important. It upholds the historical interpretation of this key chapter. In reality, our interpretation of the events of the garden influence our whole theological viewpoint. The details do matter. Therefore, this book is a must in everyone’s library. It is coherent, clear, and compelling. One of the best books I read this year.

Defending the Reality of Genesis 3

Sometimes you might think that Satan is attacking the Bible in book-chapter-verse order. It might take him a while to accomplish his purpose as there still is a remnant who believe and are willing to fight for the veracity of the Scriptures. But, eventually he gets a foot in the door and that’s all he requires. Case in point Satan has already had widespread success in his attack on Genesis 1 and 2 with the attack coming from both outside and inside the walls of the church. Once Satan slithered through the doors of the church in his attack on Genesis 1 and 2, he began on the next chapter – Genesis 3. What about this whole incident in the garden? Did it really happen? Were Adam and Eve real people? And whoever heard of a talking serpent?

These issues (well, almost all of them) are what this volume engages. What Happened in the Garden: The Reality and Ramifications of the Creation and Fall of Man is a scholarly, technical defense of Genesis 3. The book consists of a series of focused essays that is divided into three parts: 1. Reality of Genesis 2-3, 2. Theological Ramifications of the Creation and Fall, and 3. Worldview Ramifications of the Creation and Fall. The volume is edited by Abner Chou, professor of biblical studies at The Master’s College and Seminary and published by Kregel Academic. The contributors are all experts in their various fields.

Chou readily admits that the content of the essays is technical by demand but that there was an attempt to make the material understandable to the lay reader by placing “technical detail in the footnotes.” Unfortunately, this goal had limited success. Virtually all of the essays contain various amounts of technical detail. But that is not to infer that the lay reader cannot digest the material. All of it is well-written and all of the arguments are presented logically. The technicality of the book is its nature. Each essay is specialized.

For example, if one is scientifically minded, Taylor B. Jones’ contribution entitled “Thermodynamics and the Fall – How the Curse Changed Our World” is a moderately technical examination of how the laws of thermodynamics were affected by what happened in Genesis 3. It will appeal to the science buff. Jo Suzuki engages the gender debate. John MacArthur provides the concluding chapter “A Sin of Historic Proportions,” one that will be liked by theologians and Bible students.

Bottom line: Regardless of your field of study or expertise, if you have even a passing interest in Genesis 3 and the importance of its literal interpretation, I would recommend that you examine this book even if you concentrated on the essays that attract your interest.

How are we to understand the events of Geneses 1-3? Christians don't always agree on the interpretation of these three foundational chapters. Are we to take every word literally and at face value? How do we handle the apparent poetry? Is there room for disagreement? How do we address the hermenutical objections to a historical reading of the text? Are they with any merit? If so, how do we address these objections? What do these things tell us about who God is and how we relate to him? Furthermore, how do these things inform how we understand the world around us?

These are the types of questions that you will find addressed in What Happened in the Garden? This book is a collection of essays written by the faculty of The Master's College. The contributors have proven experience and expertise in the areas they write on and they write in such a way that the average person can understand and grapple with these issues. For those who wish to dig deeper, the contributors provide ample footnotes and it is here where the picture begins to zoom in and expose incredible detail. I especially appreciated chapter 8 in which Taylor B. Jones tackles the topic of "Thermodynamics and the Fall". This was, in my opinion, the single most convincing essay on the effects of sin on the physical world around us and the grace of God expressed by his creation of a world which, despite the effects of sin, has all the sustaining energy necessary for duration of its existence. This had a way of inspiring hope int he new creation and responsibility/stewardship for this current world.

The book is organized so that we are introduced to the reality of the text, and then forced to grapple with the resulting theological and worldview implications. Readers may find themselves disagreeing with the contributors at times and yet impressed by the breadth of their knowledge and the grace with which they address opposing views. This book certainly belongs in every church library and should also find a welcome home in personal libraries of those with a particular interest in the theology of Genesis 1-3. For my homeschooling friends, they will find that What Happened in the Garden provides rich lessons in hermeneutics, theology, and worldview.
