I hate when the book1 is just the first chapters of the book. I did not read the reviews before buying and really hate myself for it! The book end abrupty at 80%, after that cames a few pages of book 2, and a sample of another book. PLEASE sell a entire book next time, charge more but end the story!

And I also did not the plot. It is hard to believe that they are in College and not High School. To YA for me.

If You Loved Neanderthal Seeks Human Prepare to Fall in Love Again
By Connie
"One day I would persuade my grandchildren to gather 'round while I put in my good dentures -- the ones with no space between my two front teeth-- and I would tell them for the millionth time about how Hercules had once accidentally kissed me in the chemistry lab at my Ivy League university."

Penny Reid is at her best creating quirky, flawed characters. The ones who seem st the most odd are generally the strongest. Those who appear the most confident to the world are the most flawed.

I was struck by the similarities between Janie and Quinn from Neanderthal and their younger doppelgangers in Elements of Chemistry. Janie is enamored of arcane facts. Janie retreats into a litany of synonyms when stressed. Both Quinn and Martin are wealthy alphas, whose manwhore histories hide their emotional pain.

Katy Parker and Martin Sandeke are the products of wildly intelligent over-achievers. Martin has lacked for nothing but love from his family. Katy is loved, but by parents who have difficulty expressing it. Her mother's interactions with her are rather over the top. "Topics for discussion ran the gamut of Purchase Request: New Bike, to Family News: Your Grandmother has cancer. ... My father and I would submit agenda items to George, my mother's PA no later than Friday night. A draft agenda would be circulated Saturday afternoon..."

The story starts with our heroine in a cabinet. Hearing something about her lab partner, with whom there is mutual unrecognized chemistry, she is forced out of her comfort zone to take action.

There are many Reidianisms that will become the literary version of ear worms for fans.

"Sure, I'll think about the possibility later when I'm safely alone in bed, but I never cross-pollinate fantasy and reality."

"He's the man equivalent of a gun to the head, except without the fear for my life aspect."

"I'm not a fast and loose girl. I'm a slow and steady girl. Who knows when or if I'll ever cross the finish line?"

"I once tried being dramatic when I was fourteen. My mother told me to add it to the calendar."

"You should explain your reasons why and establish boundaries for future interactions. And you should have me there as your representative to make sure he doesn’t try to zap you with his sexy ray.”

"What does cold fusion have to do with anything?" "You tell me to relax, which is impossible. I tell you to create cold fusion, which is impossible."

"I'm not a buffet. Guys can't sample the lo mien just because I'm standing there. I get a vote in who eats my noodles."

"He’s over the hook-up girls. He’s ready for what’s next and you are the Olympic gold medal, the Nobel Peace Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Academy Award of marriage material.”

Evil is introduced right in the beginning of the book and it is no laughing matter. My only quibble with the story is when the issue of date rape is raised involving one of Martin's team members. After expressing her concern about past and future possible victims, Katy lets Martin brush off her concerns by saying he'll handle it. For Katy and Sam to just accept this statement doesn't feel right.

This hasn't stopped me from pre ordering the next two installments.

It was ok. There wasn't much plot, just a bunch of groping and kissing (which I don't have a problem with as long as there's some sort of conflict that creates a PLOT). I also found it annoying that this is not the first book in a series but the first chapters of a larger novel with a cliffhanger at the end. Unfortunately for Ms. Reid, I would have been more likely to buy the whole thing as one novel (because I read everything of hers) at $7.00 than I will be to buy the rest of the books in this "series." As of right now, I don't really care enough about the characters to move on to the second book. Maybe part of my problem is that the characters are so young, and I wasn't in the mood to read YA.

Also, there were tons of comma splices throughout this book. Examples (some from the excerpt of the next book Heat):

"This is his lab partner, she needs to speak with him about the class."
"“It’s the first sequel to The Three Musketeers, I’ve been meaning to read it."
"Martin gritted his teeth, I got the distinct impression he wanted to strangle me."
"I’ve never come to a party with someone before, I don’t know girl-rules."
"She kissed me and I pushed her away, you obviously didn’t stick around for the half second it took me to tell her I wasn’t interested.”

Has this become acceptable and I'm just out of the loop? Why choose a comma, though, when a period is just as easy and more correct? I'm old-school, and I found it distracting and annoying.
