My daughter's review of The Candle Star
By Courtney Cole, Author
My daughter read and loved The Candle Star by Michelle Isenhoff. This is her review:

The Candle Star is set back in the slave days and is about a 12-year old girl, Emily Preston, who lives on a plantation in South Carolina, but whose parents send her to stay with her uncle in Detroit. Apparently, her parents think that she could use an attitude adjustment and that her uncle could maybe help with that. And her parents are right. Emily is sarcastic and self-important. When she first arrives at her uncle's, she decides that she will be so unlikeable that her uncle will send her home.

Ms. Isenhoff writes in a very descriptive way. It is so colorful that I felt like I could really see what was happening. There were a couple of times, like when Emily was being mean to the old slave man who accompanied her on her trip, when I just felt like crying. But that's a good thing- it was just because Ms. Isenhoff's writing was so good. She showed Emily's character development from the beginning, when Emily was self-absorbed to the end, when Emily had learned that there are larger things in life than herself.

I liked the Candle Star because it showed a period of time that I haven't had a chance yet to learn much about. And Ms. Isenhoff made it come alive for me. Her characters were all so vivid that I felt like I actually knew them and I was sad when the book was over.

The only thing that was hard for me was some of the slave dialogue. It was hard for me to understand and I had to read it twice. But that wasn't the author's fault- it seems like it was the way they truly spoke, so she was being true to the era.

I would recommend The Candle Star to anyone. And in fact, when school starts, I'm going to recommend it to my teacher. It would be great for my class to read. The characters were likeable, the writing was vivid and interesting and the plot was complex. I give it 5/5 stars.

This was a review copy that I received directly from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Great for kids and grown-ups too!
By Snow Gal
The Candle Star, a work of historical fiction, is the story of a girl who, after being thrown into a completely different world, comes to see the flaws in her long-held beliefs. Growing up on a plantation in the South, Emily had never questioned slavery. When her parents sent her up North, she found herself in a world where slavery was not only nonexistent, but was considered morally and ethically wrong. As she tried to cling to her beliefs she saw the suffering in the lives of those around her and came to see that she had been wrong. I love the character Malachi. Instead of just arguing and preaching to Emily, he shows her little by little how people can live equally regardless of their race. This book is great for late elementary grades and up. It's appropriate and very enjoyable!

A Beautiful Account of the Underground Railroad
By Kelli Wheelwright
Summary:
After one tantrum too many, southern belle Emily Preston is sent away from her family plantation to live with her uncle in Detroit. The life in her uncle's inn is nothing like what she is accustomed to, therefore she resolves to be as terrible as possible in order to be sent home immediately.

As you may expect, things don't always turn out as we plan. When Emily finds herself befriending the son of freed slaves, everything she has ever known to be true is questioned. Detroit is a stopping point for 7 lines of the underground railroad, more and more freed and escaped slaves are coming through under the radar. When Emily stumbles upon her uncles secrets, she must decide what her values truly lie.

Will she return to her family home just as self centered as when she arrived, or will her time with her uncle truly teach her that there is more important things in life then her southern comforts?

K's Thoughts:
I was thoroughly impressed with this book. The characters were rich and well developed without lengthly back stories or over defining. Ms. Isenhoff has a real talent for taking uncomfortable subjects in our American History and weaving them with thought provoking and divers perspectives. I felt like both the perspectives of the people in the north and south were represented in very logical and respectful ways. It wasn't a book of slander or putting down the ignorances of others. This is also probably one of the cleanest books I have ever read, especially considering the conflict it covers.

I felt like Emily's view on slavery was completely believable given her background and the stance in the south on the subject. This was a very cleverly written and beautifully delivered historical fiction novel based on a huge turning point in our nations history. A delightful page turner. I wouldn't call this book fast paced, but rather rich in content.

At the end of the book, the author takes the time to pin point the portions of the story that were pulled straight from history. I loved that aspect. I am one that can read historical fiction and sometimes mistake it all for history. To have the true facts stated at the end was wonderful for me.

Overall, I would read anything from this author. She has a beautiful gift for bringing stories to life. Its like magic. This would be a great conversation starter between you and your children, students, and friends on the history of slavery in America.
