In the tradition of The Adventures of Peter Rabbit, this is a "garden tale" of farmer versus vermin, or vice versa. The farmers in this case are a vaguely criminal team of three stooges: "Boggis and Bunce and Bean / One fat, one short, one lean. / These horrible crooks / So different in looks / Were nonetheless equally mean." Whatever their prowess as poultry farmers, within these pages their sole objective is the extermination of our hero--the noble, the clever, the Fantastic Mr. Fox. Our loyalties are defined from the start; after all, how could you cheer for a man named Bunce who eats his doughnuts stuffed with mashed goose livers? As one might expect, the farmers in this story come out smelling like ... well, what farmers occasionally do smell like.
This early Roald Dahl adventure is great for reading aloud to three- to seven-year-olds, who will be delighted to hear that Mr. Fox keeps his family one step ahead of the obsessed farmers. When they try to dig him out, he digs faster; when they lay siege to his den, he tunnels to where the farmers least expect him--their own larders! In the end, Mr. Fox not only survives, but also helps the whole community of burrowing creatures live happily ever after. With his usual flourish, Dahl evokes a magical animal world that, as children, we always knew existed, had we only known where or how to look for it. Perfect for Reading Aloud

Just purchased the Kindle version to read to my almost 3-year-old, 6-year-old and almost 9-year-old. My toddler can take it or leave it, she is taking cues from her sisters and "oooo-ing" and "ahhh-ing" in the appropriate places. The two bigger girls love it and so do I! It has the right amount of detail so it doesn't bog down the book. It's action packed and keeping us on the edge of our seats. The end of each chapter has a great cliff hanger that has the girls begging me to keep reading. It is a tad short. It took me 20 minutes to get through the first 5 chapters so we will probably finish the book up in a couple more nights. This is the first chapter book I chose to read to the girls and I'm glad I picked this one. I was worried my oldest (already a huge bookworm) wouldn't like me doing the reading and I was worried my middle kid would get bored quickly. What a good book and great book to read together as a family!

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a fantastic book! There are a lot of cliffhangers in this book! All the characters are unique and interesting in their own way. The animals have so much personality. Its wonderful little digging creatures give it charm. This book is good to read to 1st-5th graders. The book is very enjoyable and fun. It is entertaining. If you like fantasy, this is the book for you! You would also like it if you like animals that talk and act like humans. If you like action packed stuff, you'll love this book. If you are a fan of Walt Disney's animation, you will like Quinten Blake's illustrations. You should get this book-- our class loved it!

The book I received was NOT the one that is shown. I got one with terrible illustrations. Sent it back immediately.Very misleading. I was thrilled at the image that was posted, thinking I would get that version of the book. UGH.
