About the Author
Richard Dickinson�lives in Toronto and has taught plant taxonomy for more than twenty-five years. France Royer is a photographer living in Edmonton, Alberta. Together they are the authors of Wildflowers of Edmonton and Central Alberta, Wildflowers of Calgary and Southern Alberta, Weeds of Canada and the Northern United States, and Plants of Alberta.

Good Book

This is a great addition to the existing literature about common weeds for lay people (and I suspect that even professionals will find it very useful due to the 1,200 excellent color photos). As the advertised description states, it is fairly comprehensive in scope including over 600 species from 69 families. Unlike the stated number of pages above, however, my copy has 797 pages including the index. It's a hefty volume, and well worth having for a number of uses, mine being mostly as a naturalist and gardener.
My only criticism is the lack of distribution maps to show where exactly one might find these weeds growing on the continent. Most other weed references in my home library include them, such as Bryson & DeFelice's "Weeds of the South." Even the little "Golden Guides" volume on weeds has a map for each species listed. And I don't see where it was a space issue for the publisher, as there is a good inch to two inches of space left blank on almost every page where a thumbnail-size range map would have been easily added. The closest thing to this in the book is some info about which states or provinces have given each species an official weed designation. But those aren't the only places where these weeds can be found in a number of instances I noticed while perusing the book. As the book covers all of N. America including Canada & Mexico, range maps would have been a great help in narrowing down the possibilities while trying to ID a plant in your garden (which was the stated primary goal of the book: assisting with identification). All that being said, this fault isn't nearly enough to make me regret having purchased this resource. I will just have to go elsewhere to figure out if the weed I'm looking at in the book grows where I live. An inconvenience I can live with. After all, there just aren't that many good weed references available to us regular folk. If you deal with weeds in any real capacity, you'll want this book.

Color identification book for North American Weeds

Review - Weeds of North America by Dickinson and Royer
"Weeds of North America" by Dickinson and Royer is a beautiful color printed, photographic collection of over 500 weeds from the University of Chicago Press. This is a general guide to the weeds. If full identification down specie is desired, than the complete and current manuals such as Gray's, Kaul's or the Great Plains Flora Association's should be consulted. This book will get the user close.
The images are beautiful photographs most often displaying the characteristics of the plants very well.
The descriptions are modern, easily read and mostly in simple English. The few technical terms are easily found in the glossary and diagrams of plant anatomy. Each plant has scientific name and synonyms, several common names, a quick id guide, origin, life cycle, where designated a weed, a generous description with bold headings of seed, seedling, leaves, flower, plant appearance and reasons for concern, What is missing is distribution maps. There is no indication of the spread of the invasive plant other than North America. This is a serious omission, hopefully to be corrected in future editions. A surprising addition is the listing of the destructive plant viruses that each plant harbors.
Included is a key to the plants. This is keyed to plant type, leaf arrangement, flower color with thumbnail color pictures to help guide for other characteristics. This key is easily followed even by the amateur plant lover who has only basic knowledge of plant anatomy. This key is vastly different than the technical keys in the complete manuals such as Gray's, Kaul's, Rydberg's, The Great Plains Flora Association's, or Britton and Brown's.
This book can be compared to the Dept. of Agriculture's "Common Weeds of the United States" which is very traditional and scientifically dense in its descriptions, (i.e. no paragraph breaks or headings and many more technical terms), line drawings, no photographs, and 225 weeds listed. Both are good in their own way. Both have 2014 copyright. Each has its target audience. The color costs more, but not prohibitively. Interestingly the sources listed by the books are totally different.
