A good place to start, but not essential

I'm an MS2 interested in trying to narrow down my search for which specialty I'd enjoy most. I haven't seen the previous edition of this book, but from the reviews on the previous one, it sounds like this one is essentially the same. The book is great for starting to think about different specialties and offers good advice for things to consider when trying to choose. However, all of the short write-ups on each specialty are written by a specialist in the field who is really only focused on the pros of the field. I was hoping for a critical evaluation of the possible pros and cons of each field, but instead each description is very one-sided. It does offer good stats on boards scores, average salaries for each field, match rates, etc. Overall I think it's a good reference, but it's not as objective as I was hoping and I don't feel like there were too many special nuggets of information that I might not hear about each field. I was hoping for a special inside view of the fields with tidbits that you don't know until you are actually in the field. I think that because I just don't know enough about choosing a specialty that it's a good place to start, but it's not quite what I was hoping for.

About the Author
Phong Thong Dang holds a sixth degree black belt in Aikido, a sixth degree black belt in Taekwondo, a fifth degree black belt in Judo, and an eighth degree black belt in Vietnamese Shaolin Kungfu. The World Martial Arts Hall of Fame inducted Phong twice: once for his expertise in Aikido and again for his lifelong dedication to the martial arts. He has been featured in Karate Illustrated, Aikido Journal, Aikido Today, Martial Arts and Combat Sports and Black Belt. He has practiced martial arts for over fifty years and currently teaches in southern California.

Lynn Seiser is an internationally respected psychotherapist, consultant and trainer. Seiser has over three decades of martial arts training and experience. He currently holds the rank of Sandan (third degree black belt) in Tenshinkai Aikido under Sensei Phong Thong Dang.

Outstanding bokken and jo technique diagram book with full pictorial details. A+

Excellent must have addition book for any Martial Arts fan of Aikido and Jujitsu. I currently study both the arts of Jujitsu and Aikido, and in the past I had studied Kendo fencing and also intense styles of both Karate and Kung Fu in my past. This book by Prof. Thing Dang covers the weapons applications and techniques of the dynamic art of Aikido. One needs to learn the basics of the bokken and Jo in addition to their empty handed self defense techniques.

Out of many books I found Prof. Thong Dang's to be the most descriptive, breaking down each of the moves and giving informing the reader their proper Japanese names. Very fun and educational and I recommend this book for the serious Martial Arts athlete.

While there is a lot of great information put in this book by one of the great instructors of Aikido, the techniques would have been made much more clear, if a series of photos and perhaps diagrams had been added. In comparison to works by Saito Sensei or even the book Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere, it leaves much to be desired. A great beginning level book for those interested in Aikido as it demonstrates why Aikido is much more than just another run of the mill fighting art.

if you have enjoy true crime, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. it is extremely well researched. if you have any questions about psychopathy, Mr. Rosewood has the answers. I look forward to reading other true crime books he's written.

The life and crimes of Crazy Charlie

I have read other books by Jack Rosewood, so I don't what went wrong with this one. It was very badly written. The sentence structure and punctuation was horrible. I believe he had the information but failed to present it well.

Charles Ray Hatcher's criminal history was interesting, especially the way law enforcement kept releasing him to kill more people. It was disgraceful how poorly Hatcher's crimes were handled. He would have continued killing had he not confessed to his 16 murders. And then he very cleverly committed suicide by hanging with his hands tied behind him. I would think it would be difficult to tie one's own hands behind one's back, but obviously no one questioned it.

Here are some examples from the book: "Charles had nearly six social security numbers"; "after three years of committing the crime"; "the right part of Churchill's chest hear his heart." Am I just being persnickety or do these look wrong to anyone else?

Anyway, I did not read the latter portion of the book where the psychology of serial killers was discussed. I feared it would be as convoluted as the rest of the book. I am not recommending that anyone avoid the book as it does contain an interesting case study. Just be prepared to translate as you read.

A concise and well written account

This is yet another one of those biopic reads that’s really hard to put down. In fact, while reading yet another of Jack Rosewoods books, I just had to keep turning the pages. Not necessarily because it's all that enjoyable in any way, shape or form, to delve a little too deeply into the malefic minds of such murderous men, but because I sincerely believe that most people are fascinated in one way or another by serial killers. Perhaps it’s the human morbid fascination with death. I’m not exactly sure. However, maybe it just astounds the average person as to how depraved another can be.
The author does an excellent job in documenting this particularly disturbing case. It’s well written and researched and it shows in the details provided. Of course it contains a copious list of frightening and decidedly disturbing details about the personal background and the bevy of crimes of the killer, but the macabre material is handled quite tastefully in most cases, and even the faint of heart will still probably be enthralled while reading the book.

I would highly recommend this read to all fans of the crime genre. I received a copy from the author for my unbiased review.

Quality Guru - leading Japanese contributor to quality management.

This was the first book I read on quality a long time ago and stills on my bookshelf.

Ishikawa insisted that Total quality means everyone contributes but in teams rather than as an individual, and went on to coin the phrase that quality was a thought revolution and based on the "respect of humanity". Maintaining that building a quality culture was a slow process easily destroyed by too rapid an implementation and that collecting and analysing factual data was the essence of quality control.

Like others, Ishikawa believed that quality begins with the customer and therefore the essence of any improvement is based on understanding that customers needs, aspirations and reactions. Clear and distinct clarity was needed in a specification to cover any relevant condition such as humidity, temperature and feel. He also pointed out that customer complaints rather than being a criticism was a vital quality improvement opportunity to be actively sought out.

Ishikawa built on Feigenbaum's concept of total quality and suggested that all employees have a greater role to play, arguing that an over-reliance on the quality professional would limit the potential for improvement. Maintaining that a company-wide participation was required from the top management to the front-line staff. As every area of an organisation can affect quality, all areas should study statistical techniques and implement as required with internal and external Quality Audit programmes. Going on to name areas such as engineering, design, manufacturing, sales, materials, clerical, planning, accounting, business and personnel that can not only improve internally but also provide the essential information to allow strategic management decisions to be made concerning the company.
