There are too many examples and too few theory in the book, but in general it's OK. The book is a kind of block of papers in the field of heavy tails with the emphasis on applications

Nothing more than a compilation of papers !

Even if some of the papers whithin the book are certainly important contributions to their field, my impression is that it does not justify paying that price for extended versions of the papers. The book by itself is merely a compilation of the papers but NOTHING MORE ! If you are interested, just get the papers on the web and read them, but don't buy this book !
I hoped i would find some unifying ideas in the book, or even remarks in the extended versions of the papers but nothing... I really wonder how it got published. The only useful information is the extended references for every paper (hence i gave 1 star) ...but it's not worth the price of the book !
I have been extremely disappointed because i'm used to very good work from M. Taqqu, including numerous outstanding papers, but this book is the worst i've ever bought. It does not deserves the name "book".

AN INTERESTING BOOK ON HEAVY-TAILED DISTRIBUTIONS

In principle, I must confess that I am astonished by the low rating given by the other reviewer! The book is a very good one, emphasizing topics that have not appeared in any other book so far (as, for example, applications of heavy-tailed distributions to financial modeling).
The reason for which I did not give 5 stars is because I am a computer-network specialist, hence I was expecting to see more networking applications than financial ones.
Nevertheless the mathematical content of the book is at a high level; I can assure everyone about it because my first degree is a first-class B.Sc. in Mathematics.
My current job has to do with the design of IP-based multimedia networks and, in fact, I am one of the very few persons (three at most) in the Balkans and probably the only one in Greece who applies the concepts of self-similarity, long-range dependence and heavy-tailed distributions to the design of real communication networks for everyday use. Hence I contend that my opinion matters.
I found particularly helpful the last chapter, which describes numerical techniques. In fact, this is the first book on self-similarity and long-range dependence to address such issues.
I strongly recommend the book for applied mathematicians and financial-modeling experts, while it is quite an interesting reference for network-performance experts. I also recommend it strongly for research students in any of these disciplines.

A great teacher!

This is a great book and very well written. Although the title is a little misleading, it does deliver on its promise.

By the time you complete the 24 one-hour lessons you will be creating great websites. I have purchased several web programs and books in the past but still always felt intimidated by the process of creating a website. When things worked, I gave a sigh of relief and chalked it up to luck. When they didn't work, I spent days or weeks trying to fix the problem and pulling my hair out (no easy task when you don't have much to start with). Thanks to Expression Web 4 and this wonderful book and his videos (purchased separately) I feel confident in what I am doing for the first time.

Expression Web 4 is my primary web development tool. Since upgrading to Windows 10 the tool that I was using was no longer compatible with the OS. This book has quickly fill the gaps and solved every issue that I've had, Eespecially the Ftp config. issues that I were showing successful but not updating the web pages on the website.

A good book but could have been better

After going through the first 13 chapters, I was thinking this is really worth a full five stars. Some of these chapters will take a lot longer than an hour, though, if you work through the exercises. And working through the step-by-step exercises in the chapters is the only way to learn the functionality of Expression Web 4. No one, however, should be dissuaded by my lukewarm three-star review. There is a lot of valuable material in this book. But it's not for a beginner even though Morten Rand-Hendriksen writes in the Introduction: "As a result, this book is written with the novice designer in mind." The novice is likely to get bogged down after the first few chapters and not complete the book.

Book for you to find out the tricks in the FI Certificate Exam

Thanks for the authors. I read the book a week before the exam I passed the exam with a pretty high marks.

After reading this book, you will know the skills how to pass the exam. The book is good, with the detail explanaions in each question.

However, some of the answers are quite confusing. For example, provided that there is a option "All of the above", the authors still expect you to select all the options. One of the questions has no correct answers but without giving an option "None of the above". Few questions the answers and the explanations are not consistent.

Anyway, those mistakes are not critical and this book is still worth to buy if you are about to take the exam. In facts, there are no such kind of books in the market so far.

There are too many language and factual errors, inconsistencies and other ambiguities in this book to enable it be used with any degree of comfort. It is necessary to check facts constantly as answers and their explanations are all too often inconsistent.

The online shopping experience was not upto the expectation, i was told the book will be delivered in 10 working days and after 10 days got a message saying "your consignment is unbable to be delivered due to some circumstances and your money will be refunded back".
I had exams and couldnt prepare on time. Sad the service didnot meet any expectations.

This book proved to be slightly over simplified to me as a designer. However, in today's world, I am just thankful that someone takes the time to set a subject down on real paper, that I don't have to read a screen blurry eyed until midnight to get the one or two facts I'm looking for. Apologies to the Kindle people; call me a dinosaur.

a recommended read about the Civil War

This readable, concise account of America's Civil War is spliced with quotes from real people, making the facts more personal, and the reader clearly able to identify with the issues that brought the nation to war as well as the effects of the travesty. It includes a good insight into President Lincoln's stance against slavery and the attitude of the South after the war.

Moves very quickly and is a good overall of the war. Well worth the money. Great introductory book for those who want a grasp of the war.
