Gappy's Gadgets (Tales from the Land of Ononokin Book 4), by John P. Logsdon, Christopher P. Young

The endearingly hilarious tale about a young Gnome who strikes out on his own!Gappy Whirligig is an industrious Gnome who has yet to reach the Age of Tinkering.

He's 42.

But, as anyone who lives in the Gnome town of Hubintegler can tell you, things have a way of exploding when least expected. In a flash, Gappy's life flips upside down, leaving him to make the decision to either strike out on his own or become a 42-year-old foster child. Gappy demonstrates his industrious spirit as he leaves Hubintegler's rules and regulations behind and instead seeks to make his mark in the seedy town of Planoontik.

Along with his Orc assistant, Shrit, Gappy fights through the red tape of starting a business, running a business, dealing with the local Halfia (the Halfling Mafia), and battling the competition.

The land of Ononokin gets its influence as a hodgepodge from Monty Python, National Lampoon, Family Guy, Terry Pratchett, Discworld, Robert Asprin, Myth Adventures, Piers Anthony, Xanth, Douglas Adams, Harry Harrison, and countless other comedic mediums. Readers will find a new, fun, comedic fantasy world to play in. Wizards, magic, Dwarfs, Orcs, Ogres, Trolls, Gnomes, Halflings, Vampires, Zombies, Dragons, Gorgans, and more fill the vastness of Ononokin.

Gappy's Gadgets - A fun read!
By C. Ridgway
I greatly enjoyed this book. It is a light hearted comedy set in the fantasy world of Ononokin. The main character, Gappy Whirligig, is a likeable industrious young Gnome who sets out to accomplish his life’s dream. There are also many other great characters in this story. This is light comedy fantasy and is not epic or high fantasy, it is more like Pratchett than Tolkien.

Fantastic!
By Amazon Customer
Gappy's Gadgets is pure laugh-out-loud fun! The characters are unique and engaging. The plot is fast-paced and entertaining. And the comedy is hilarious. I couldn't put it down -- I finished the book in one sitting. (As a caution to other readers, I must warn you that if you stay up till 3:00am reading this book as I did, you may find yourself kicked out of the bedroom by a sleepy spouse who does not understand what could possibly be so funny in the middle of the night. Rest assured, this book is worth annoying your spouse over -- it's that funny).

I loved the way Logson and Young created such laughable, lovable, relatable characters -- even their villains. I also loved the way they combined the absurd with the mundane to create humor. These two talented writers definitely know how to delight readers.

I hope that Logson and Young plan to write more Ononokin books (4 is not enough!) because I will be eagerly waiting to read them. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it.

An enjoyable ride through a rather strange yet familiar world
By murphyfields
Disclaimer: I was given a draft copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed it enough that I bought the released version just to see how things changed. I am a geek who likes those sorts of things.

This is a fun book and a joy to read. Great character development. Several laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of giggles. My only complaint is that I had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen early on in the book, and that kept away the tension I like to feel when a character I love is in danger. Of course (*spoiler alert*) the hero will win and the villain will lose, but I want to have just a few moments of doubt. That lowered my rating from 5 stars to 4.

Overall, the fantasy world is well developed, and there were many times where I was introduced to a new character and thought "I have met this person" even though the character might be an orc or a troll.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in the mysteries of life. The author does an excellent job. Not only is his thesis statement original and creative, but the amount of evidence supporting his claims are undeniable. He clearly thoroughly investigated his topic and the narrative flows effortlessly from chapter to chapter. This book is an absolute jewel and I will reread it throughout my life.
P.S. I had the pleasure of meeting and associating with Brannon when I lived in Hawaii. He was also very kind towards me and was never arrogant in the way some scholars come off as. One of the coolest and most interesting humans I have ever met.

Handbook of Surface and Interface Analysis: Methods for Problem-Solving, Second Edition (Surfactant Science)From Brand: CRC Press

The original Handbook of Surface and Interface Analysis: Methods for Problem-Solving was based on the authors’ firm belief that characterization and analysis of surfaces should be conducted in the context of problem solving and not be based on the capabilities of any individual technique. Now, a decade later, trends in science and technology appear to have validated their assertions.

Major instrumental assets are generally funded and maintained as central facilities to help potential users make informed decisions about their appropriate use in solving analytical problem(s). Building on the popular first edition, this long-awaited second edition was motivated by the increasingly common industry view that it is more cost-effective to contract out analytical services than to maintain in-house facilities. Guided by that trend, this book focuses on developing strategic thinking for those who decide which facilities to access and where to subcontract analytical work. It covers most of the major tactical issues that are relevant at the location in which data are being produced.

New Information in this Second Edition Includes:

  • Electron-optical imaging techniques and associated analytical methods
  • Techniques based on synchrotron sources
  • Convenient and versatile scanning probe group methods
  • Scanning tunneling microscopy, biocompatible materials, and nano-structured materials
  • Assessing benefits and limitations of different methodologies, this volume provides the essential physical basis and common modes of operation for groups of techniques. Exploring methods for characterization and analysis of particular types of materials and/or their relevant applications―the text synergizes traditional and novel ideas to help readers develop a versatile and rational approach to surface and interface analysis.

Casework: A Psychosocial Therapy, by Mary Woods, Florence Hollis

Known in academic circles as the “bible” for clinical practitioners of social work, Casework: A Psychosocial Therapy introduces readers to the basic theory and principles in the practice of psychosocial therapy, along with attention to the historical development of the approach as it has been enriched and expanded over the years. The authors’ approach reflects a balanced focus on people, their environment, and the ways in which people interact with their environment. Essential techniques including how to conduct initial interviews with clients, crisis intervention, arriving at assessments, and choosing appropriate treatment, are thoroughly explained, and often clarified with case studies and vignettes, preparing readers to assess social work clients from a variety of perspectives. The book is designed for the graduate-level student who needs to master the principles, theories, and approaches of the psychosocial approach to applied practice, but it may also be used to fit a variety of courses, including the Introduction to Social Work BSW student who is looking for supplemental information on the basics of clinical practice. Now in its fifth edition, Casework has been thoroughly revised to keep discussions clear and up to date. New material has been added throughout, including a greater variety of case studies, discussions about current topics such as the influence of ethnicity and diversity in the social work practice, changes in family life roles, changes in ideas and practice approaches, and a significantly updated bibliography for reference.

    About the Author
Mary E. Woods received her MSW from the Columbia University School of Social Work. She recently retired after ten years as Adjunct Associate Professor at Hunter College School of Social Work in New York City and over twenty years as an independent clinical practitioner with individuals, couples, families, and groups. In addition to her private practice, Ms. Woods had an extensive practice of consultation to other clinicians and with several social agencies. She has served as a field instructor, training director, and program developer during her seven year tenure in a family service agency, and she planned and directed a store-front counseling service to clients who had difficulty traveling to the agency’s main facility. She is the author or co-author of several articles and chapters, including “Psychosocial Theory and Social Work Treatment” in Francis J. Turner’s Social Work Treatment, and “Personality Disorders” in Francis J. Turner’s Adult Psychopathology II (due in 1999).

Florence Hollis was the sole author of the first two editions of Casework: A Psychosocial Therapy. She did her undergraduate work at Wellesley College, received her master’s degree from Smith College School of Social Work in 1931, and earned her doctorate from Bryn Mawr School of Social Work and Social Research in 1947. Through the depression years, she worked at family agencies in Philadelphia and in Cleveland, where she taught part-time at Western Reserve University. She was the editor of the Journal of Social Casework during the 1940s, and in 1947, she joined the teaching staff at Columbia University School of Social Work. While at Columbia, she developed her typology of casework procedures, which became the basis for ongoing and rigorous research into worker-client communication and the casework process. Over the course of her career, she published three books and over forty articles on casework. As a part of her busy life, Dr. Hollis saw clients on a regular basis; she considered it essential to the successful performance of her other professional roles.

Casework: A Psychosocial Therapy, 5th edition
by Mary Woods and Florence Hollis
For many years the classic Woods and Hollis text has been required reading for graduate students of social work at the Hunter College School of Social Work. The updated Fifth Edition is even more useful than previous editions in its in-depth and detailed explanations of modern social work practice. This book addresses clients' concrete practice needs, environmental deficits and pressures, and personal and relationship dilemmas. Seldom in the literature is the field of social work firmly grounded in its own special knowledge and traditions, described so fully that the reader can clearly distinguish it from other helping professions. Recently, when asked about which of many professional writings they found most helpful, eight-five percent of a class of first year social work graduate students consistently identified Casework as particularly valuable in illuminating knowledge essential to their education for social work; they noted the text's clear explications of the unique history, values, missions and rick accumulation of practice experience-and the complexity of the interactions among these-that must be mastered to train for a career in this profession. Students have further indicated that the book is extremely helpful in identifying the theories underlying social work practice and how these theories can be specifically applied in work with a broad range of clients, presenting a vast array of quandaries and difficulties, seen in many settings.
Clear explanations of techniques (the "how-tos" of practice)aid new social workers in developing skills of listening and intervening. The importance of "mutuality" between clients and workers in emphasized. The text explains how clients-individuals, couples and families-can be helped to claim their own strengths and become empowered to resolve dilemmas, make decisions and choose changes. From the outset, the reader learns about social work's dual focus: on people and their environments and on the interactions and "fit" between them. The book describes and illustrates how people's lives affect and are affected by external conditions. Straightfoward discussions and a wide variety of case examples demonstrate how inner and outer phenomena are in constant interaction and inseparably intertwined, and how social work interventions have to be tailored to focus on those systems most accessible to change.
The four chapters on family and couple treatment introduce beginning students to multi-person interviewing and are often studied intensively by second year and post-graduate students who are preparing to gain further understanding and skill in these modalities.

    A Treasure Chest
By Dr. Howard Robinson, Assistant Professor of Social Work, Fordham University, New York, NY
I have been teaching graduate social work for fifteen years and have yet to discover a text about psychosocial casework that surpasses this revised classic in its clarity, depth, thouroughness, and wisdom. The basic psychosocial orientation and typology of casework procedures defined by Florence Hollis remains intact, yet the text, as a whole, is substantially updated by Mary Woods, whose fluid prose is rich in clinical detail, articulate, and aimed at what the practitioner yearns to know and needs to know. As an experienced clinician, I still turn frequently to the chapters on couple and family treatment where protocols for navigating these exceptionally tricky modalities are clearly presented. In chapter 16, for example, Mary Woods develops a typology of "relationships and problems" detailing 12 patterns of couple conflict that, in itself, serves as a primer for the novice practitioner. Approaches to nontraditional couples (premarital couples, unmarried pairs, cross-cultural relationships, and gay and lesbian couples) are amply discussed as well with sensitive consideration of social differentials in power experienced by men and women and by couples of color. The text consistently partializes assessment and techniques of intervention so that one can read and assimilate complex clinical procedures in bite size pieces. Heuristics are laced throughout the text, giving one a feeling of personal guidance. The fifth edition of Casework is a treasure chest for students and teachers of social work and the helping professions to dig into time and time again.

A review of Casework: A Psychosocial Therapy
By Linda S. Kurtz, MSW, ACSW, NASW Diplomate in Clinical Social Work
As a graduate social work clinician of 15 years, I turn to Casework: A Psychosocial Therapy to renew my understanding, hone my skills, and refresh myself on the particulars of treatment techniques and procedures involved in individual, family, and couple work. There are few books that blend theory and the "how-to" of clinical practice in the ways that this book does. It is an exceptionally clear text. This book reminds the clinician of the importance of listening closely to what is important to clients as opposed to imposing upon them what we think should be important to them. Respect for the client is foremost, and this book underlines this and other values which represent the best our profession offers. It is the definitive test in psychosocial casework, and I heartily recommend it to others.

Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

A stunning literary thriller in the tradition of Umberto Eco. The discovery of a forgotten book leads to a hunt for an elusive author who may or may not still be alive...Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'cemetery of lost books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles that have long gone out of print. To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son Daniel one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the shelves and pulls out 'La Sombra del Viento' by Julian Carax. But as he grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find. Then, one night, as he is wandering the old streets once more, Daniel is approached by a figure who reminds him of a character from La Sombra del Viento, a character who turns out to be the devil. This man is tracking down every last copy of Carax's work in order to burn them. What begins as a case of literary curiosity turns into a race to find out the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax and to save those he left behind. A page-turning exploration of obsession in literature and love, and the places that obsession can lead.

    From Publishers Weekly
Ruiz Zafón's novel, a bestseller in his native Spain, takes the satanic touches from Angel Heart and stirs them into a bookish intrigue à la Foucault's Pendulum. The time is the 1950s; the place, Barcelona. Daniel Sempere, the son of a widowed bookstore owner, is 10 when he discovers a novel, The Shadow of the Wind, by Julián Carax. The novel is rare, the author obscure, and rumors tell of a horribly disfigured man who has been burning every copy he can find of Carax's novels. The man calls himself Laín Coubert-the name of the devil in one of Carax's novels. As he grows up, Daniel's fascination with the mysterious Carax links him to a blind femme fatale with a "porcelain gaze," Clara Barceló; another fan, a leftist jack-of-all-trades, Fermín Romero de Torres; his best friend's sister, the delectable Beatriz Aguilar; and, as he begins investigating the life and death of Carax, a cast of characters with secrets to hide. Officially, Carax's dead body was dumped in an alley in 1936. But discrepancies in this story surface. Meanwhile, Daniel and Fermín are being harried by a sadistic policeman, Carax's childhood friend. As Daniel's quest continues, frightening parallels between his own life and Carax's begin to emerge. Ruiz Zafón strives for a literary tone, and no scene goes by without its complement of florid, cute and inexact similes and metaphors (snow is "God's dandruff"; servants obey orders with "the efficiency and submissiveness of a body of well-trained insects"). Yet the colorful cast of characters, the gothic turns and the straining for effect only give the book the feel of para-literature or the Hollywood version of a great 19th-century novel.

    From Booklist
Call it the "book book" genre: this international sensation (it has sold in more than 20 countries and been number one on the Spanish best-seller list), newly translated into English, has books and storytelling--and a single, physical book--at its heart. In post-World War II Barcelona, young Daniel is taken by his bookseller father to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a massive sanctuary where books are guarded from oblivion. Told to choose one book to protect, he selects The Shadow of the Wind, by Julian Carax. He reads it, loves it, and soon learns it is both very valuable and very much in danger because someone is determinedly burning every copy of every book written by the obscure Carax. To call this book--Zafon's Shadow of the Wind-- old-fashioned is to mean it in the best way. It's big, chock-full of unusual characters, and strong in its sense of place. Daniel's initiation into the mysteries of adulthood is given the same weight as the mystery of the book-burner. And the setting--Spain under Franco--injects an air of sobriety into some plot elements that might otherwise seem soap operatic. Part detective story, part boy's adventure, part romance, fantasy, and gothic horror, the intricate plot is urged on by extravagant foreshadowing and nail-nibbling tension. This is rich, lavish storytelling, very much in the tradition of Ross King's Ex Libris (2001). Keir Graff

A sensation across Europe... a page-turning mystery... a coming of age tale... And it's a hymn of praise to all the joys of reading, stylishly caught in Lucia Graves's entrancing translation. -- Boyd Tonkin INDEPENDENT crowd-pleaser in the mode of The Da Vinci Code... Intertwining playful detective caper, compelling political thriller and sweeping historical romance, the narrative coils back beyond the savagery of the civil war to the world of the tainted Spanish aristocracy, before slowly unravelling the dark secrets born of Franco's tyranny. Almost every book group I know about had read The Shadow of the Wind... the book is about a boy who becomes obsessed with an author. You Are Paged To The Cemetary Of Forgotten Books
    By Amazon Customer
You know those books where you pick 'em up and then you discover five hours have passed and you're late getting ready for work? This is that book.

Mr Zafon's book is engrossing, the characters are so rich you feel you know them, and can picture them in your mind, even the villains. His descriptions of post-war Barcelona is so deliciously evocative, you can feel yourself riding the trams through the neighbourhoods to follow the characters around in that place and time.

When you finish this book, you will feel torn away from friends when you close the cover. However, you can reunite with them again in Zafon's "The Prisoner Of Heaven" which picks up with the characters.

HIghly recommend this if you love mystery, adventure and well-drawn characters.

    Deliciously satisfying
    By brio
I usually read non-fiction such as history or biography. Occasionally I read a quick, easy mystery like CJ Boxx or Carl Hiaasen to break up the monotony Since my wife and I are going to Barcelona for our honeymoon I decided to read this book as it came highly recommended. It did not disappoint! I haven't read a complex, lengthy novel in years and I was lamenting the possibility of not being able to finish it before our trip since I usually read a few pages at night before falling asleep. Since I was laid up for a few days with a bad back I was able to finish it in record time (for me). This novel has it all: twisting plot, richly descriptive language, complex characters, and a setting which I am looking forward to visiting (thanks to the walking tour map included in the book). I am looking forward to reading more of Zafon's novels.

I write about this book because I loved it, and I want to remember it
    By Jamie Davis
I write about this book because I loved it, and I want to remember it. In writing, I am forced to reflect upon how much pleasure I derived from reading the book.

It is a gothic tale set in 1945, Barcelona. Daniel, the bookseller’s son, is introduced to The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, and makes his selection of one book from the labyrinth to take home and care for. In doing so, he finds himself involved in a real-life mystery. You see, the book he selected was written by a man named Julian Carax, and very well may be the last book in existence by Carax. Someone has been finding the Carax works and destroying them.

I love that it is a book about a book! I love the story, but I also love the writing itself, and how Zafon has a style that makes me want to keep reading. The man is a beautiful writer. The “Angel of the Mist” story that begins on page 233 is a haunting touch, as is Maria Jacinta’s detailing of her encounters with Zacarias (begin on page 260), and the storyline of Daniel and Fermin visiting her in the asylum.

I loved this first book so much that I immediately started reading the second book in the series, and I am about 200 pages in to “The Angel’s Game,” right now! To think, I found this gorgeous read because of a visit to the Book Warehouse over the July 4 weekend, where I unwittingly purchased the third book in the series first!

The best Tarot coloring book I have found
    By Gavin Caruthers
This book has all the cards and they are very detailed. Other books either have thick lines and not much detail or don't have all the cards. Plus the drawings have nothing on the back. I've already started coloring, what a great way to enjoy the Tarot.

If all you're after are copies of Tarot cards to color in, this might be adequate, but you can find the same on line... No info given about the cards, though, so nothing to learn about here. Other Torot coloring books are available here on Amazon that afford the colorist and Tarot enthusiast a much more complete experience.
