INTRODUCTION

Every oil painter knows the feeling: You’re standing in front of the easel studying your painting, and while nothing seems particularly wrong with it, there’s nothing particularly right about it either. The picture sits there, staring back at you, obviously in need of help, but sending no clear signal as to what kind of help.�
�
In my experience, when that happens, when unknown forces have dragged the picture down to the murky depths and are blocking all attempts at resuscitation, it’s time to hit the big issues, time to strip away superficiality and go after the essentials.�

But which essentials? As you will see in the following pages, there are many oil painting essentials that are important, but they can’t all be summoned up and thrown at the suffering painting. When you run up against a serious artistic impasse like the one described above what you need are—prime essentials!�

And luckily, after forty years of intensive research, I’ve figured out exactly what these prime essentials are:�
- Accuracy: Make sure you accurately depict the subject.�
- Design: Arrange the material in a dynamic pattern.�
- Depth: Make sure the near/far feeling of space is convincing.�
- Drama: Intensify the visual energy.�

Each of these prime essentials is important, and each needs to be given full attention by the oil painter.�

What often happens, though, is that one or more of them is neglected, and the picture doesn’t reach its full potential. For example, if you put all your energy into accuracy but neglect design, depth, and drama, the painting becomes just an inventory of what’s seen. Or if you emphasize design at the expense of depth, accuracy, and drama, you get a picture with a flat, decorative, cutout look. If the picture is to succeed, each prime essential needs to be fully manifested on the canvas.�

The painting, in other words, has to run on all four cylinders. Neglect any of them and you’ll end up with a lopsided, incomplete picture.�

Not that getting each prime essential right is easy—some artists may have no problem with drama, say, but may flounder on accuracy. Others might do brilliantly with accuracy, but fail to design the picture. So how do you master all four?

Absolutely wonderful.

The paper uses in the soft cover seems a little cheaper then in his other book. That being said the context in the book itself is wonderful. I finished the whole book in two days and will defiantly keep going back to it when I'm working. Easy to read and full of good technical advice. I would also recommend Problem Solving For Oil Painters by Gregg Kreutz, On Becoming A Painter by Robert A. Johnson, The Big Book Of Oil Painting by Jos� M. Parram�n, Capturing The Moment In Oils by David Curtis and Robin Capon, Oil Painting Secrets From A Master by Linda Cateura, An Artist Teaches by David A. Leffel, Alla Prima 2 everything I know about oil painting by Richard Schmid and Drawing Lessons From The Great Master by Robert Beverly Hale. These are some of the other books that I have found to be very helpful.

This is an excellent companion to the original book

I have a lot of books on painting and drawing, but I have always said that if I could only keep one, it would be Gregg Kreutz's "Problem Solving for Oil Painters." Now I have a problem--I have two oil painting books that I couldn't part with. This is an excellent companion to the original book, discussing concept and process essentials as they apply to portraiture, landscapes, interiors and still lifes. A pleasure to read and look at, I look forward to putting a lot of wear and tear on this book in the studio.

Stunning book - LOVE it! Great resource!

Gregg Kreutz is an artist and instructor at the Art Students League of New York and has done so for over 40 years. This is his second book and it is exceptional! The paintings in this book are absolutely stunning! Gregg is a very talented artist.

I was excited to receive this book because as a painter, I'm fairly new to oil painting - only trying it recently for classes. What Gregg does in this book is he believes that every artist should try all the different genre's and in doing so you get better as an artist and more skills. The book teaches mastering of portraits, figures, still life, landscapes and interiors.

There is so much amazing information in this book: How to create depth in paintings, importance of light and shadow, structure, importance of significance of everything in the painting, values, colors. Gregg was discussing how light should be the main event of the painting - the heart of it. Looking at his painting's, he really demonstrates it so beautifully with lots of shadows and always a light somewhere to draw the eye (usually in the center). I also found his tips on how to create movement in a painting very helpful also.

I absolutely love how he teaches portraits, figures, still life, landscapes (plain Air and studio) and Interiors. He covers so many points for each section, often with step by step guidance. I'm very excited to try all of these and feel very confident to do so after reading this book!

As a painter, I love learning new techniques and styles. I love Gregg's style. I would most definitely recommend this book for everyone! Even if you don't paint, it would make a great coffee table book as the paintings inside are stunning.

The New edition of this classic book has been thoroughly revised, but remains faithful to the principles that have established it as a favorite among teachers and students around the world. It provides a concise and relevant treatment of inorganic chemistry and is written with such clarity that it is undoubtedly among the easiest to read of its competitors.

The book is organized into six 'Parts': theoretical concepts and hydrogen; the s-block; the p-block; the d-block; the f-block; and other topics (the nucleus and spectra). To make sections easy to find, the text ids divided into a large number of chapters and includes a comprehensive index, a detailed table of contents and around 600 references classified according to complexity.

An important aspect of this book is its concentration on the commercial exploitation of inorganic chemicals, something noticeably missing among other texts at this level. In this new edition that strength has been built on and much of the coverage in this area has been extended and brought up to date. Interest in environmental chemistry has continued to escalate since the last edition and this is reflected in increased coverage of the inorganic aspects of the subject. Every chapter in the book has been revised and updated and it now follows the IUPAC recommendation that the main groups and the transition metals be numbered from 1 to 18.

The guiding principle of the numerous changes to this new volume has been to ensure that treatment of material is always simple, straightforward and relevant. The result is a book which can be used with confidence by those who require a thorough grounding in inorganic chemistry and its importance to the modern world.

Fantastic!

This is surely the best and most interesting introduction to inorganic chemistry that I have come across. If this does not get you interested in the subject, I don't know what will. I have been using this book for almost six years now. I have used it to prepare for entrance exams, for college and university courses and for general reading. It starts with an overview of basic principles of bonding and trends in the periodic table. The rest of the book is then devoted to the discussion of individual groups of elements. But this is no drab discussion where paragraphs with the title "uses of X" where X is an element, abound. Lee instead focuses on the most essential and interesting properties of the elements. As the title indicated, the discussion is concise, but never compromises on the essentials. The applications of inorganic chemical science which Lee chooses are most interesting and pervade all aspects of our material existence. He gives due importance to special topics such as Pollution, Bioinorganic Chemistry, The Atomic Nucleus and Spectra. He mixes the right blend of theory and application in this work. In fact, its such a pleasure to read this book, that it actually makes good bedtime reading! Its one of those very few technical books which you can read casually. Many 'other' chemists find inorganic chemistry boring. However, an understanding of its basic principles is of paramount importance to a study of any other chemical dicipline, not to mention its inherently interesting ideas, and its application to the material world. This book shows you how.

Nice, pleasant book

I like this book, because one dosent feel like the author tries to put in more or less irrelevant stuff to make the text take up more pages, like it can be seen in some books of American origin. I bought it on the nice reviews instead of the pensum-recommended book, Housecroft, and Im not disappointed at all. However, I cant give it 6 stars, since I havent read it all, and dont know the covering of all the subjects.

After reading the reviews I thought this would be a useful book. It certainly has lots of information in it, that you can find for free on the internet. I certainly did not learn anything I already did not know.

Although that was annoying it was not as infuriating as finding out that the author works for a company called HomeAway Inc. She fully disclosed the fact that she worked for them, which is fine, but she must have forgotten that almost all of the portal sites she mentioned are owned by HomeAway Inc, a small little fact that must have slipped her mind when her company was lining her pocketbook. In one passage on page 142 she recommends that you sign up for all 4 of the portal sites she `recommends' and only puts and asterisk by HomeAway, failing to state that HomeAway owns the other 3 that she 'recommends' you sign up for. Nice Christine, thanks for the full disclosure. After she recommends you don't go with a rental management company (in Chapter 9 she has a personal crusade against property management companies) because they take too much money, she turns around and `recommends' sending $1500 to her parent company. Wow, the hypocrisy!!! She certainly has chutzpah.

She peppers the books with 'recommendations' of websites that are either owned or affiliated with the company that employs her. I would recommend buying a book on how to rent vacation homes from someone who is not in the pocket of a company whose job it is to take a percentage of your vacation rental income. Maybe someone with at least some degree of ethics and objectivity.

For full disclosure's sake, I am not affiliated with any rental management company or any company that directly or indirectly competes with Home Away Inc. In fact, I am not even in the real estate industry in any capacity. It is just very aggravating to find out that I spent $20 to get a 300 page advertisement for HomeAway Inc.

It turns out that Mrs. Karpinski is just an arm of the HomeAway Inc marketing machine. I do not think that the author is the `expert' that she claims to be, just a huckster trying to sell the wares of HomeAway Inc. I hope in her next edition she does the ethical thing and decides to fully disclose her relationship with what she is trying to sell you on.

If you think I am just some crazy loon who likes to rant, just do a little internet research and you will quickly find out that HomeAway Inc owns most, if not all of the `recommendations' by the author.

For some, an invaluable source of information and counsel

Obviously, the value of this book will be determined entirely by its relevance to a specific reader who is now thinking about buying (or who now owns) a vacation rental property and needs expert advice on HOW to manage, furnish, maintain, and promote that investment. I have never owned such a property but have rented several over the years. Some were rented directly from their owner; others were rented through an agency engaged by their owner. The comments which follow are based on the premise that I have decided to purchase a second home. Let's say it is located where there are two peak seasons, summer (swimming, boating, golf, tennis, etc.) and winter (skiing, skating, snow boarding, etc.) My objective is to maximize rental income from it during both seasons. These are some of the questions I need to answer:
1. Where and how to begin?
2. How should I finance it?
3. Which numbers need to be crunched?
4. How to determine which property is the right place for me?.
5. Should I have a management company handle everything, use a management partnership program, or self-manage the property? Why?
6. Which are the most effective strategies, tactics, and resources for marketing my rental property?
7. What about financial terms and conditions (e.g. pricing)?
8. Which criteria to use when selecting renters?
9. What is the best system for processing reservations?
10. Which are the most common problems? How to solve each?
Karpinski addresses these and other critically important questions throughout 18 carefully-organized and well-written chapters, followed by seven appendices in which she provides forms (e.g. rental rules and regulations), identifies most helpful Web sites, explains special discounts, identifies vacation exchange Web sites, lists state sales tax offices, refers her reader to learning centers throughout the U.S. (e.g. to improve computer skills), and concludes with an annotated list of individuals and companies she highly recommends.
If you are thinking about purchasing a vacation rental property or if you now own one and are dissatisfied with its ROI, this book will be invaluable. However, with all due respect to Karpinski, I think it would be foolish to rely on only one source of information and counsel. Once again I am reminded of Derek Bok's response when outraged parents of Harvard students complained about a tuition increase: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Deciding whether or not to purchase a vacation property obviously requires rigorous and extensive due diligence. In my opinion, a careful reading and then (yes) re-reading of Karpinski's book is essential to that process. That said, check out other sources on the same subject, including books offered by Amazon which have received the highest ratings by readers. This book will also be helpful to current owners who have hired a management company or participate in a management partnership program. In Chapter 5, Karpinski explains why self-management "is the only way to maximize your income on your vacation property." For many current owners, that may well be true but only IF they are willing to invest the time and energy self-management requires.

Some good info buried in a too folksy style

The topic of the book is dead-on for what I am looking for... how to rent by owner a beach condo I just bought. Unfortunately, it reads like a How to Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich book from an introductory writing class. I would think that anyone who can afford to buy a beach property doesn't need to be explained about what a fixed rate vs adjustable rate loan is.

The folksy nature and the rhetorical questions being asked and self-answered is not complementary to the topic and the intent of the book. I'm sure the author is excited about the topic, but I've never seen so many explanation points in a business/real estate book....

The author is very against management companies and goes to extremes to tell why one shouldn't be hired. She says a management company will keep 50 - 60% of gross profit. The mgmt companies I spoke to in my beach town charge 15 - 20% and by reputation are very different the the typical management company described here.

So, overall some good, useful information but you have to weed through alot of... Why??? Yes!!! The author could have benefited from an editor.

About the Author
The late Robert George Torbet, a former seminary dean, professor, and historian, held degrees from Wheaton College, the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer Seminary), and the University of Pennsylvania from which he earned a PhD. He was editor, department director, and board member of the American Baptist Board of Education and Publication (now Judson Press), and also served as president of the American Baptist Convention. Although Torbet produced several historical works, he is probably best known for A History of the Baptists.

Must read for students of church history

First of all, I don't know what book the reviewer from South Carolina read. Torbet distances himself from so-called Baptist successionism in the very first chapter of the book. He traces the developement of the modern Baptist church to the Particular Baptists in England.
This is an outstanding overview of not only the history of the denomination, but the developement of the "Baptist Distinctives" that set Baptists apart from other evangelical denominations. There is a rich history behind the Baptist church -- it is unfortunate that the Trail of Blood advocates have clouded that heritage in questionable historiography.
If you want to know what the truth is behind the Baptist church's history, read this book -- not Carroll's fantasy work.

Excellent, Accurate Baptist History

Mr. Torbet has done an excellent job detailing the often misunderstood history of the Baptists. His comments are supported by numerous references and sources so that the serious student may research his conclusions on their own. The history of Baptists, as shown by the author, did not begin in the Reformation, but their roots go back to the first Baptist baptizing in the Jordan River. Mr. Torbet traces the roots of the Baptists through the Montanists, Novatians, Paulicians, Anabaptists and others, who though not called Baptist by name, hold the same historical doctrinal beliefs as today's Baptists. This is an excellent book for anybody searching for a credible Baptist history book without the modern leanings toward ecumenicalism.

Comprehensive and dated

Tolbert's book is comprehensive and does a good job of overviewing Baptist groups in Europe and North America. The book is dated and does not include any of the important developments among American (Northern) Baptists and Southern Baptists of the past 25 years.

Tolbert seems to write from a northern perspective and seems to view Southern Baptist history from a distance fueled by a distaste for the American South and a lack of understanding of the deep role Southern culture has among Southern Baptists.

Difficult to read and unnecessarily repetitious in his history, Tolbert's is still a standard in Baptist history. Though Leon McBeth's history is more readable, it is also much more liberal in its leanings and transparent in his opinions and perspectives, hurting the contribution in his monumental work. Thus, Tolbert remains the standard in Baptist history.
