About the Author
David P. Stowell is a professor of finance at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, where he teaches classes that focus on investment banking, hedge funds and private equity. He also teaches undergraduate courses on these topics at Northwestern University, University of Utah, and Utah State University.

Prior to joining Northwestern in 2005, he was managing director at JP Morgan, working in Chicago with responsibility for part of the firm's mid-west investment backing business. In addition, he worked in investment banking at UBS as managing director and co-head of U.S. equity capital markets, and at Goldman Sachs, where he managed an equity derivatives business and worked in corporate finance in New York and Tokyo. He was also a managing director at O'Connor Partners, a hedge fund based in Chicago.

He graduated from Utah State University with a BA in Economics and from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business with an MBA in Finance. In addition to his current teaching responsibilities, he manages Paradigm Partners, a boutique investment bank that provided M&A and capital raising services and general advice in investment banking, hedge fund, and private equity activities to selected clients.

Excellent content

Used for a class, required reading. The reading was great, the questions were maddening. They'd ask for things that just weren't in the reading. I'd spend hours trying to find it, going over and over and chapter. Hopefully this is resolved in the 2nd edition. MUCH effort was put into the content of each chapter but the questions seem to be written by someone who hasn't even read the book.

If you don't have to do the end of chapter quizzes then you'll love it. If you have to do the quizzes for a class, plead with your professor to not use the stupid questions.

This truly practical guide to the investment banking, hedge fund and private equity world is a long overdue gift to the industry. As a practitioner, I strongly recommend this book to others in the industry. Written by a seasoned professional with extensive experience in both industry and academia, this book has served as a great desk reference for me and my Wall Street colleagues. For students, it will serve as a great supplement to more theory-based corporate finance curriculum. Stowell's clear and concise language, coupled with real-world case studies and knowledge from other prominent experts (from "Training the Street" valuation coaches to senior bankers and asset managers) make this book refreshingly unique in its approach and practicality. This book should be required reading for any junior professional in industry! I hope that investment banks and other Wall Street firms incorporate this book in their analyst and associate training programs as an enormously valuable guide and resource.

Monotheism and the Plurality of the Abrahamic Traditions

F.E. Peters, Professor Emeritus of Middle Eastern Studies, History, and Religion at New York University has written extensively on the comparative studies of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In the early 1980s, he published a short book suitable for lay audiences titled "The Children of Abraham." Then, in 2006, Peters edited "The Children of Abraham" published it in this new edition together with a short introduction by John Esposito, University Professor of Religion and International Affairs and Founding Director of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the Walsh School of Foreign Services, Georgetown University.

The book offers a short yet erudite and thoughtful overview of the history and interrelationships of the three Abrahamic religions. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Peters writes, were "born of an event that each remembers as a moment in history, when the One True God appeared to an Iron Age sheikh named Abram and bound him in a covenant forever." These thre religions "grew to adulthood in the rich spiritual climate of the Middle East, and though they have lived together all their lives, now in their maturity they stand apart and regard their family resemblances and conditioned differences with astonishment, disbelief, or disdain." The religions share in common their Abrahmic origins. Equally important, they share the belief in monotheism and worship the one and the same God. "Whether called Yahweh or Elohim, God the Father or Allah, it is the selfsame deity who created the world out of nothing, who fashioned humankind in his own image, who made the covenant with Abraham and his progeny, and who subsequently intervened in human history to punish his enemies and chastise his friends, and to send instructions, warnings, and encouragement to those who would listen."

The three Abrahamic religions have had an intertwined history and have sometimes been friends but too often enemies. Peters' book is a historical study of the similarities and differences among the three faiths. It has the more ambitious goal of provoking thought on how the plurality of warring religious traditions can be reconciled with the philosophical belief in one God.

The book covers the beginnings of each religion starting from the sixth century B.C. when the Jews returned to Palestine from the Babylonian Exile. It continues through the Middle Ages and concludes at roughly 1500 A.D. Peters explains: "[a]ll the issues of reform and all the wellsprings and mechanisms of revival are present in the place and period under consideration. Faith and reason, Scripture and tradition, understanding and enlightenment are all very old adversaries."

The scope of the book moves in a rough direction from history to philosophy.It begins with a discussion of post-exilic Judaism, the Second Temple, and the development of sects and Rabinnic Judaism. It develops the life of Jesus and the origins of Christianity against this background. Then Peters shows the development of Islam by Mohammad, with the influences of the two earlier religions, in the highly different culture of sixth and seventh century A.D. western Arabia.

Peters continues with descriptions of the communal structure of the three religions, their understandings of Scripture, Tradition, and religious Law, and their ways of worshipping God. The final chapters of the book become philosophical as Peters discusses asceticism and mysticism in the three faiths and their philosophical development in the Middle Ages. The philosophical development begins with the classical Greeks and proceeds initially through a great series of Islamic philosophers. Jewish and Christian thinkers learned from and elaborated the teachings of the Greek and Islamic thinkers in the context of their own faiths. Peters throughout gives substantial attention to Philo Judaeus, an early Jewish thinker who lived at about the time of Jesus. Philo was among the first in the Abrahamic tradition to attempt to combine Greek philosophy with religious teaching and to propound an allegorical, philosophical reading of Scripture.

In the final chapter of his book, Peters moves from the secular history, which he develops in his book, to "sacred history" which is how each of the three religions sees itself. Peters writes: "[f]or Jew, Christian, and Muslim alike the history of revelation and the history of the community of believers are the twin foundations of sacred history, but it is the concurrence of the matter of that history that binds them forever together." Peters offers an insightful, suggestive discussion of how each of the three faiths understand themselves, their relationship to the Abrahamic covenant, and each other. His discussion is informed, fair, and non-polemical and does not privilege one form of understanding over others. The book will allow the reader to think more clearly about how, if at all, the belief in one true God can be reconciled with the diversity of ways of knowing and worshipping that God.

The text is succinct and as clear as a scholarly exposition will allow in a short space. The book includes extensive footnotes and references which will allow the reader to pursue the inquiry in more detail. The book includes a useful glossary of technical terms from the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions. Peters' book will appeal to readers with a serious interest in the comparative study of the Abrahamic religions and in the relationship between monotheism and religious diversity.

A good survey

This is a good introductory survey and comparative study of the three major religions to develop from the early Abrahamic traditions. According to scholar John Esposito, the revised edition of this book is more important than ever given the international attention drawn to the relationship between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. According to Esposito, for too long has the 'Judeo-Christian' school ignored the fact that Islam, too, comes out of this same source of origins, and that there is a Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition that can be identified and studied.

Author Frank Peters describes a three-strand tradition that sometimes works together and sometimes is at odds and warfare against each other, but neither intention is the case with his text. His purpose is to underscore both shared aspects and distinct elements, and to pull these back together to their common source. This is in large degree sacred history, which has its own aspects unique from secular and modern history. It draws together the history of revelation (both in scripture and in oral and practical traditions) as well as the history of the community of believers (the people, the church or Church, etc.). Later peoples had to strive to remain faithful to these strands of history and the earlier visions, to show how their actions and identities were consistent with them.

Peters explores the earliest foundations of Judaism as the starting point, it being the oldest of the three monotheistic Abrahamic religions. He develops a brief history involving both scriptural and archaeological/historical research, but brings in the interpretative framework of Christianity and Islam regularly where those traditions differ either as to the 'facts' or the interpretation of similar stories.

Jews, Christians and Muslims are all 'people of the book' in one fashion or another, and the parallels in these texts, both how they came to be and what their contents are (and how they are variously used and not used) is remarkable. Peters looks at the development of scripture and extra-canonical writings, community and hierarchical issues, attitudes toward law (Torah, Mitzvot, Halakot, Canon Law, Shariah, Hadith, etc.), worship, and theological method as it has shared and divergent developments across the three religions. Given that there has always been the case of minorities of one (or more) of the three living amongst the majority of another of the three religions, such cross-polination yet differentiation was almost inevitable.

There are extensive notes (intended, according to Peters, to be useful and 'to provide guidance rathe than proof on specific points'), a handy glossary of terms and a good index. This is a useful book for scholars, ministers and general readers, and provides a unique insight into the comparison/contrast of the three major religions that impact the modern West and Middle East specifically, and given the interdependent nature of the planet, the rest of the world generally.

This is a fascinating study.

A well done comparative study

First, I hope I'm reviewing the right book!! My book is Children of Abraham Judaism Christianity Islam, Both of these were listed as separate books by this author, but the one called Judaism, Christianity, Islam was too long to be the one I have.
Anywayssssss..... I enjoyed reading this book. But don't expect any more than what the title says or any controversial arguments. Its just an informational source comparing the 3 Abrahamic world religions. Though the layman can read it, and its nothing difficult, its not exactly an introductory book either. I suggest you already familiarize yourself with the 3 religions prioring to using this study.
But it does a good job presenting the history, theology, and rites of the Children of Abraham. =)

This is yet another amazing story by K Webster, it made every emotion in my body come to life. I loved it!

Caroline and Bentley Harrison are a couple on the brink of divorce, only a few more months and it will be final. They fell in love in college and have become a force to be reckoned with. After moving to Vancouver and Bentley becoming a financier, Care a full-time housewife, their lives began to fall away from one another. Bentley worked long hours to bring in the big money while Caroline shopped and socialized trying to fit into her role, but their love for one another took a backseat.

That is until the trip to Louise Harrison's, Bentley's mother, for Christmas. On their way Bentley received an urgent call that the market was about to make a drastic shift, so he immediately searched for a signal on the back country road so he could pull over and get his work taken care of. Not very long after he found service and started working the signal faded and while he chased it again, along the road aptly named Us, they lost control of the car and went careening down the steep embankment. Bentley and Caroline were both injured in the accident and so was the car.

The near death experience was a wake up call for them both, they realized what they had and didn't want to give it up. They decided to fight for the love that had always been there, but they lost sight of long ago. They spent many days fighting the grueling winter storm in Caribou Country living off what little provisions they had and trying with everything they had to stay alive until help would arrive. Finding precious moments to reminisce about days gone by.

The time they spent together was exactly what they needed because by the time Harley, Bentley's brother, found them they were like a couple of lovesick teenagers barely able to keep their hands off one another. They vowed to always fight for their love and never to let the other get lost again. They even took a moment to stop for a picture with the Us road sign in the background, which turned out to be exactly where they would always stay. Their love swelling and growing right along with them.

The Road Back To Us is a beautiful second chance romance. This book follows the story of Caroline and Bentley. Caroline and Bentley had the perfect romance. They fell in love, got married and thought they’d live happily ever after. Somewhere along the lines, life had other plans. Bentley became so focused on his work that he lost sight of what was really important. And Caroline began to resent him. Sure she never wanted for anything, but she was lonely and missed her husband. And after time, that resentment turned into anger. They find themselves in a spot that they never thought they’d be in, on the verge of divorce. However, with Christmas being right around the corner, they find themselves on one last road trip together. One last trip to save face with family before their entire world falls apart. Little did they know that this trip would have the power to change everything. An accident will put them to the test. With the reality that they may not survive, will Bentley and Caroline be able to put their differences? Will the two of them finally see just how precious life and love is before it’s too late?

I got lost in Caroline and Bentley’s story almost immediately. I was captivated by their situation. It was clear that despite their differences, the two of them still loved one another, but somehow, they lost their way. I was frustrated with the two of them and wanted to yell at them to stop their fighting and realize what a real and special thing that they have. They were both so stubborn. It took a car accident to finally put things in perspective. Let me tell you, I was rooting so hard for the two of them. Not many people get that second chance and here they’ve been handed one. I could only hope that the two of them would realize it before it’s too late.

The Road Back To Us took me on such a great journey. This is a great example of what a second chance romance should be. We all know that the road to happily ever after, isn’t always easy. It’s tough and sometimes ugly, but it’s so worth fighting for. This book had it all for me: romance, drama, angst, steam, suspense. By the time I got to the last page, I was grinning like a fool. This book is definitely one of my favorites from K. Webster.

I Need Another Star......

Holy wow!!!! K. Webster did it AGAIN! A-FREAKING-GAIN!

I loved this book so damn much it kinda hurts. I need another star. Seriously, six.

Anyhoo {takes deep breath}, I don't even know where to begin. So let' start with a basic overview. Bentley and Caroline have been together, well, forever. And somewhere along the way they both started assuming they knew what the other wanted and obliged. Needless to say, that didn't work out exactly as they hoped. Both "B" and (swoon) "Care Bare" lost not only their connection, but also a piece of themselves.

Caroline became caught up in presenting the "perfect wife" to Bentley's friends and colleagues and forgot who she was. She also allowed Bentley's desire and drive to succeed push her to the back seat in their life together. This, of course, caused her to resent him.

Bentley thought he was doing right by Caroline, providing her with a fantastic lifestyle she could be proud of. But, the resentment i mentioned? Yeah, he felt that. It made him work harder - but not on their marriage.

The emotional roller-coaster was amazing!!! K was able to pull me in from page one. I wanted them to see the light the entire time. I neeeeeded them to have open and honest communication so that I could be whole - that is how invested I became.

The petty arguments, the sexy scenes, the revelation of feelings; the entire package gave me something only a great book can give a reader....

THE FEELS! Yup, got them (and chills, goose-flesh, an occasional balled fist).

I live it is crazy how often we can get cough up in our own life's and forget to think about others. Maybe a little brother or friend in need. We really need to put yourself in other peoples shoes more often and think what would we want if we where them. This book will shed some incite on selfishness and provide some good advice and different ways you can improve your character and become a better person! I recommend this book to everyone because improving yourself in positive way can be life changing.

This book is pretty helpful - I know someone who struggles with selfishness (actually we all do to some degree), so this book really helped me understand the causes and effects of selfishness. In the book different topics are covered like how to deal with selfishness, looking deep inside yourself to uncover selfishness, how to stop being selfish, etc. Overall, I’d recommend reading this to anyone who needs to deal with it or who knows someone who struggles with selfishness.

In 1982 the leaders of the national Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) recognized the need for greater focus on shipbuilding education; the result was the establishment of an education panel (SP-9) within the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Ship Production Committee-the implementation arm of the NSRP. The first project authorized by the panel was a textbook on advanced concepts of ship production. This edition was revised in 1995 to update the contents to be consistent with technological advances made since the book s publication in 1988. The focus of this book is state-of-the-art technology and its application to the principals and practices of shipbuilding employing group technology. The authors present a system aimed at optimizing productivity in shipbuilding under current technological conditions. Also included are chapters devoted to basic manufacturing and construction processes and the design for production and CAD/CAM applications. The book is suitable for the upperclass undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as serving as a valuable resource for practicing shipbuilding professionals. Chapte one contains history of shipbuilding and statistics relating to production and market share. Chapter two has been expanded to more directly incorporate material relating to shipbuilding economic theory. Chapter four contains new material, which relates to the fabrication process. New material has been added to Chapter five to more accurately reflect the conditions of current ship production facilities. Chapter six (Ship Design and Engineering), Chapter seven (Planning, Scheduling and Production Control), and Chapter eight (Accuracy Control) have all been updated to reflect the impact of computers on these important areas. Chapter nine (Ship Conversion, Overhaul, and Repair) has been totally rewritten to reflect the experiences of a major consulting firm that has extensively supported shipyards in improvement of their conversion and repair operations.

Excellent detailed guide to the art

In a world where new technology and software constantly dazzle, John Purcell has given us a text that focuses on art and craft. I found his detailed discussion and diagrams to be extremely helpful--he significantly raised the level of the quality of my current indie film project. I found his discussion on the use of room tone and transitions alone to make this book a winner. My editing experience extends back to the days of tape and razor blades. NLE provides both challenges and opportunities for enhanced creativity and audience engagement. This book deals with both in an art-and-craft context independent of the hardware/software platform in use. Highly recommended for anyone looking to produce high quality finished dialog tracks (or prepare them for a final mix), from indie home studio to a sophisticated Hollywood working environment.

About the Author

Terryl Whitlatch is an accomplished, scientific and academically trained illustrator who extensively studied vertebrate zoology and animal anatomy. She has worked for various zoos and museums in the US and The World Wildlife Fund as Senior consultant for Wildlife Art and Animal Anatomy. She is considered to be one of the top creature designers and animal anatomists working in the field today

In a career spanning over 25 years, Terryl has many projects to her credit, including Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Special Edition, Jumanji 1 and 2, Men in Black, Brother Bear, Dragonheart, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Curious George, The Polar Express, and Beowulf. For over seven years, Terryl worked for Lucasfilm Ltd., Industrial Light & Magic and George Lucas' JAK Films. Her unique combination of illustration skills and comprehensive knowledge of animal anatomy and movement are essential components in the design, anatomy and physical animation aspects of believable creature creation.

In her work on Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, she worked directly with George Lucas for whom she designed countless creatures for the films and related products, including CD-ROMs. A collection of her work for Lucasfilm, The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide was published by Chronicle Books in 2001 to critical acclaim and popular success. Terryl also designed for many electronic and interactive games for leading publishers including Steven's Spielberg's The Dig, for LucasArts.

Terryl has also worked with many major studios and effects houses as a highly sought after creature and concept designer. Clients include Industrial Light and Magic, Lucasfilm, Ltd., Pixar, Walt Disney Feature Animation, PDI, Entertainment Arts, LucasArts, Chronicle Books, and various zoos and natural history museums.

Terryl is also the author of “The Katurran Odyssey”, volume one of a forthcoming series “The Katurran Trilogy”. In addition Terryl is involved with several other book and film concepts, as well as teaching Creature Design and Construction/Anatomy at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA.

Beautiful and inspiring

[[VIDEOID:mo28OMDS8F5QOU3]]This book made my face light up. Packed in this 160-page book is a collection of new artwork from Terryl Whitlatch. You won't see any of her Star Wars creatures that appeared in The Wildlife of Star Wars - you should probably get that book as well.

The gallery consist of paintings and sketches of real and imagined animals. The designs for the imaginative creatures are beautiful and believable. There are sea, land and flying creatures. Great variety.

Many sketches are included, some picked from her art classes. For selected creatures, they are so detailed separate drawings on the muscular anatomy and bone structure are included. Scribbled on the sketches are labels and notes, though a bit small but only because there's so much packed onto the page.

Besides creature concept art, there are also stylized character designs. Rocket rhinos, psychotic pandas, comical cerberus, cupid frogs are just some of the many animated ideas. They are really fun to look at.

This isn't an instructional book so there aren't pointers on how to draw, but you can get lots of ideas or understand what's possible just by looking at the drawings.

This inspiring book is highly recommended to anyone who loves animal art.

Buy From This Seller!

Right when I saw this book I knew I needed to have it. However, due to personal experience I am weary about buying used books without feeling them first. But, like I said I NEEDED this book and like the impatient person I am I took the risk against my better judgment.
I'm Glad I did.
Not only did the book arrive way before I expected it to but the condition it came it was astonishing. Not only was it wrapped like it was a plate of gold but the book itself was in practically new condition. In fact, they could have put down that the book was new and I would have believed it.
I absolutely wish I lived in California as I would take a trip and visit them in person to tell them how much I loved everything. I was hoping beyond hope that they were somewhere in my state so I could do so!
And, not only that. But when I opened my book and glanced at my receipt, in the corner was a hand penned note that she hoped I was happy with my book. You have no idea!
If I can give you any advice, if you ever order a used book online do so from these people. You will not be disappointed!
As for the book itself it is a beautiful artist reference for creatures both real and imagined. Go figure. It is chocked full of colored/completed designs along with unfinished sketches detailing real animals, estranged creatures with cartoons/caricatures scattered here and there. I personally will be using it for reference and inspiration for my novels. But for artist I think it is in the 'must have' category. It is far from being extremely professional but it is beautifully defined and gives plenty of musculature and skeletal structures for all kinds of creatures -even humans. If you like imaginative bestiaries/reference books then give this one a once-over!

My name is Tommy Barnett.

I’m a pastor and have devoted my entire adult life to helping people connect with God and find better ways to live. I could fill up this book and more with all kinds of spiritual and practical ideas about what works in life and what doesn’t. I think it would be good stuff, but I have one practical idea that I know from my own experience rises far above all the others.

I admit it’s not an overly unique concept, like the invention of the Internet, for example. However, it’s an idea that has helped me realize success and great satisfaction in all aspects of my personal and professional life. I mean everything—from personal goals and dreams to marriage to raising a family to relationships to work.

I believe the idea can change your life, though, as it has changed mine.

Most importantly, it has helped me serve God and others more effectively. Trust me, my idea is not rocket science; in fact, it’s so simple that anyone can understand and benefit from it.

Many people think of a half hour as a minimal or meaningless gap in time, downtime to catch your breath between periods of major effort. But the truth is your half hours can determine the difference between success and failure. Your half hours direct and shape your future.

You can literally change your world in thirty minutes. In the same way that your effect on the world is felt one life at a time, so is that effect delivered through the careful and thoughtful investment of your half hours. The beauty of this reality is that anyone can do it. You don’t need a PhD, and you don’t need a life coach to pull it off. All you need is to accept the idea, have a clear sense of your God-given purpose, examine your activity patterns, sensitize yourself to your time choices, and start taking advantage of the power of a half hour.

Every half hour in your day is a power-loaded resource. Your choice of how to spend those minutes is the focus of this book, which I intend to make a practical conversation about a resource that we misunderstand, abuse, take for granted, and ignore.

I want to help you become the person God intends you to be and accomplish His plans for your life. And in order to do that, you need to use your small increments of time wisely—not just the big slices of time that are devoted to both routine daily activities and major life events.

I know that it’s not easy to find even a “free” hour in the world we live in. I also have learned that it’s difficult to accomplish a great deal in a quarter hour—especially if you need to communicate graciously and genuinely with another person within that time frame. But a half hour—it works!

Not what I expected

I found this book in my local bookstore in the business management section. Based on the description I expected it to be a time management and productivity book with an emphasis on living a balanced (Christian) life. Instead it was mainly an anecdotal book from a Pentecostal minister regarding the ways he believes God has used him in ministry. It might be worth reading if you were looking for inspirational stories for church building, but if you are primarily interested in a time management book this is not it.

All It Takes Is Half An Hour

You really can't know the value of time. There is a lot that can happen in a small segment of the day. Barnett suggests that a small portion of the day can mean so much to the rest of the time. Nothing he suggests is impossible to implement. It is written in an easy to follow style. The tone is conversational. It is like having a friend walking along with you with advise'
This book is a must for those who wonder the value of time.

Can You Afford Half an Hour?

Tommy Barnett has written another self-help book – just what we need in our world! Yes, that was oozing with sarcasm; so, if you missed it, go back and reread that opening line. The Power of Half an Hour is a simplistic book, and the author admits so in the introduction. Yet, that simplicity is what attracted me to the book. Far too often, humanity likes to overcomplicate the things that are simply crystal clear.

If you choose to tackle this book, I do want to throw out two specific cautions: (1) heed the advice of the author -- do not “race” through the book but take it one chapter a day for a month by jotting down thoughts; and (2) halt the tendency to move on immediately to the next self-help/leadership book. Therein is part of our problem! We move from one book or one fad or one practice to the next without mastering the previous one.

Barnett’s idea that 30 minutes, if used correctly, can change your life is absolutely correct. Whether we believe it or not, we are defined by our moments. The private moments that hardly anyone can see are what shape our lives, character, success, and work. What he espouses is obviously a Biblical principal: Ephesians 5:16 says “Making the most of your time because the days are evil” (NASB). He quotes a man named Harvey Mackay who said it quite well: “Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back.” (xii)

The book is organized into 30 chapters and is designed to be read inside of 30 minutes; so the author is reinforcing his own premise by design. Each section has a “Half Hour Power Principle” and the last few pages of the book include a daily personal action plan. Barnett has established a simple and useable format to assist any and all readers that wish to improve. Everyone has 30 minutes a day that can be set aside for personal and spiritual development, so we do not have an excuse (unless we admit our laziness).

I encourage you to do what the author says in the “tag” line of the book’s title – take back your life thirty minutes at a time. You can do it, but the question is: will you do it? Life is too short to drift aimlessly. Take 30 minutes and set the direction with God’s help.
