Interesting stories

As the title says this book is a collection of stories about people who lived and were influential during the early European settlement of British East Africa. Some of the stories are from interviews with people who were there at the time and knew the persons concerned. I enjoyed it. Stories are a good length to read before going to sleep.

Mind-blowing

I have never read a book quite like this before. It is completely devoid of political correctness so often associated with revisionist history. The narrative is sharp and cuts like a knife. This book was copyright in 1954 which affords it two advantages: 1) it pre-dates political correctness and 2) The stories are told as first hand accounts told by the old timers when they were still alive. I can't begin to tell you how exciting it is to read African history when it's told by those who were actually there when the history was the present and not the past. Whew! What a ride!

Unexpected pleasures

This book goes well beyond Mr. Hunter's usual white hunter/safari fair. It is about a collection of characters, Arab, African, European and others who were around at the turn of the 20th century and on into the late '40's. It would probably NOT be considered politically correct, but Mr. Hunter and his co-author Daniel Mannix try their best to be unbiased in telling their tales. It begins with the story of Arab slaver Tippu Tib who had many adventures, including helping Stanley find Livingstone! A nice sketch of John Boyes (who was for a time, the king of the Kikuyu) is included for those who haven't read his own book. It finishes with Dr. L. S. B. Leakey who was as much Kikuyu as white man. I was unaware of his role in the Mau Mau troubles. In all, there are 15 tales of individuals and families who were part of the opening of Africa. As the authors say in the end: "Some were cruel, some prideful; probably a number of these pioneers were unwise, as all humans are. Many were heroes in the best sense of the word. But they all shared in a quality of courage which is the essential ingredient-at any frontier, on any continent, and at any time."
Finally, there is a nice bibliography at the end. I hope to read many of those tomes listed, if I can find them!

Still the standard text

You understand topos theory when you understand this book. I cannot say the same of any other.
Mac Lane and Moerdijk SHEAVES IN GEOMETRY AND LOGIC is a beautifully written book, a long and well motivated book packed with well chosen clearly explained examples. Both those authors have a rare gift for conveying an insider's view of the subject from the start. My own book ELEMENTARY CATEGORIES, ELEMENTARY TOPOSES goes quickly and simply to the key ideas (if I say so myself). Barr and Wells TOPOSES, TRIPLES, AND THEORIES uses the most efficient tools to get at the central theorems.
But no other book goes as concisely and comprehensively to all the aspects of toposes as this one. Category theory, algebra, logic, arithmetic, geometry, and cohomology all come in, in a well chosen perspective. This book is hard to read in places, especially at the start. It cannot serve alone as an introduction unless you are really gifted. But it remains the best single text on the subject.
Johnstone has a three-volume set on the current state of topos theory due to appear later this year. It may well become the standard reference. But it will not replace this book.

Enslaved African Americans helped transform the United States economy, culture, and history. Yet these individuals’ identities, activities, and sometimes their very existence are often all but expunged from historically preserved plantations and house museums. Reluctant to show and interpret the homes and lives of the enslaved, many sites have never shared the stories of the African Americans who once lived and worked on their land. One such site is Mount Clare near Baltimore, Maryland, where Teresa Moyer pulls no punches in her critique of racism in historic preservation.

In her balanced discussion, Moyer examines the inextricably entangled lives of the enslaved, free blacks, and white landowners. Her work draws on evidence from archaeology, history, geology, and other fields to explore the ways that white privilege continues to obscure the contributions of blacks at Mount Clare. She demonstrates that a landscape’s post-emancipation history can make a powerful statement about black heritage. Ultimately she argues that the inclusion of enslaved persons in the history of these sites would honor these “ancestors of worthy life,” make the social good of public history available to African Americans, and address systemic racism in America.

LCD screen offers superb anti-reflection properties and features a hardened scratch-resistant glass cover. The autofocus system has been upgraded from the MkII's nine AF points to a far more versatile 61. This is the first time Canon has installed its top-spec AF sensor into a non-series�one camera since the days of film cameras. Movie formats are 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at 30 frames per second, 25fps or 24fps, 1,280 x 720 pixels at 60fps or 50fps, and 640 x 480 pixels, again at 60fps or 50fps, and picture quality is excellent.

Educational and fun drumming games and exercises. Kenya Masala - Rhythm Play!

Fantastic educational tool that makes learning very fun. I used many of these musical games with students from 5-10 and they loved it. Also fantastic for adults. Fits any age group! One of the best purchases I've made. Thanks, Kenya Masala!!

Wonderful for the Non-Musician Leader!

Fantastic! Amazing! Easy to use, and SO, SO USEFUL! I can't recommend this book enough if you are a non-musician planning to facilitate any kind of a therapy or play percussion group. I have a good sense of rhythm and I'm outgoing by nature, but even if you are inhibited and a little rhythmically unsure, this book will aid you greatly. There is a CD that provides a variety of basic beats. I love the author's candor regarding when players are likely to lose interest, and how to change that up, and also the his insights into the level of concentration that the different activities require. This book is a gem. Buy it. Spread the joy.
