Field Guide to the Spiders of California and the Pacific Coast States (California Natural History Guides), by Richard J. Adams

With over 40,000 described species, spiders have adapted to nearly every terrestrial environment across the globe. Over half of the world’s spider families live within the three contiguous Pacific Coast states—not surprising considering the wide variety of habitats, from mountain meadows and desert dunes to redwood forests and massive urban centers. This beautifully illustrated, accessible guide covers all of the families and many of the genera found along the Pacific Coast, including introduced species and common garden spiders. The author provides readers with tools for identifying many of the region’s spiders to family, and when possible, genus and species. He discusses taxonomy, distribution, and natural history as well as what is known of the habits of the spiders, the characters of families, and references to taxonomic revisions of the pertinent genera. Full-color plates for each family bring to life the incredible diversity of this ancient arachnid order.

Best Regional Spider Field Guide
By M.H.
I have been studying spiders for almost a decade and am intimately familiar with all the spider field guides currently on the market in North America. (There truly are not very many.) I would consider this book the single best regional field guide on spiders in the entire country. The taxonomy is current, the information excellent, and the color plates are beautiful and accurately represent each spider. For any budding arachnologist, this should definitely be one of the books in your arsenal. Congrats to RJ Adams & Tim Manolis for a job well done!

SOLID FIELD GUIDE
By RobH
This is a small yet hefty book with 300 text pages and 70 pages of plates containing 400+ color illustrations of California spiders. I found the text to be up to date, informative and with good references should you wish to take things further. It also seems to cover all the spider families found in California which is an achievement in itself.

The use of illustrations rather than photographs has pros and cons. Comparing it with similar guides based on photographs (~350 photos in A Guide to Spiders of Britain and Northern Europe by D. Jones or ~200 photos in Spiders of the Eastern United States by Howell and Jenkins), my feeling is that photographs usually make for better identification. Having said that, when checking against the spiders I know well I can say that the illustrations would enable accurate identification (and bugguide.com or nathistoc.bio.uci.edu/spiders/index.htm can always be viewed as a photographic supplement/confirmation).

The only illustration I found surprising was the egg sac of H. pluchei in plate 9. I observed marbled cellar spiders around the outside of our house for several years and never saw the egg sac in the nursery web in the way illustrated. In fact I only observed it released by the female temporarily for feeding or mating. I guess I question why such an unusual event was illustrated rather than the normal holding of the egg sac by the chelicerae. It would be helpful to have a bit more background about how the illustrations were made: were fresh specimens always used, how many of the species were observed in their wild habitat by the authors, and so on?

With the exception of the widows and a few others, all the spiders are given more or less equal coverage. My preference would be that the commonly seen spiders always be illustrated and and given a more detailed description. For example several Theridions are illustrated but not T. melanarum which is most often observed, being almost ubiquitous on door and window frames. It might enhance the usefulness of the book to include photographs next to the main text for the 30 or so most common CA spiders. One simple way to determine what is "common" is to count the number of submissions it has from California in bugguide. All the above are relatively minor quibles: overall I rate this an above average field guide - and it is the only guide specifically about our California spiders.

Another Great Guide from the University of California Press
By David B Richman
I just received my copy of Richard J. Adams "Field Guide to the Spiders of California and the Pacific States" and was most pleased with it. The color illustrations by Tim D. Manolis are alone worth the investment in buying the book. It joins books on North American spiders and ants, and California dragonflies and damselflies, as well as bees, published over the last few years by the University of California Press. All of these are excellent works. The current guide for California and the Pacific states is probable the best modern regional guide to spiders that I have seen. While final identification of most spiders requires examination of the sexual anatomy with a binocular microscope, this guide will probably get most specimens to the families and genera covered, with some help from a hand lens. The coverage is remarkable and includes all of the families known from the area covered.

I do not know the author but have had correspondence with the illustrator. I was pleased to find three species that I described and named (two as sole author and one with Rick Vetter of the University of California-Riverside) discussed and illustrated. All three are recognizable from the excellent illustrations. A number of other species with which I am familiar were also easily recognized. I only wish such guide books had been available to me when I started out in arachnology.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in the spider fauna of the Pacific Coast, and indeed it should serve fairly well in much of the western U.S.

In the Spirit of our Founding Fathers, I bring you the 110 rules that guided the life of George Washington, our nation's first president. In a day when being crude, crass and offensive is in vogue, these rules speak to a different impulse. They remind us that beyond our desire for the immediate gratification of every whim there are other people with their own sensibilities and notions of dignity. they remind us of the early days of this country when being civil to friend and foe alike was not only good manners but a sign of one's worth. Each of the rules is illustrated by a cartoon and accompanied by a modern observation.

Good for gifts or gags. Suitable for friends or foes.

A Great Addition To Your Library And/Or Supplement To Homeschool Curriculum
By Ctwink
George Washington's Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour is a great addition to anyone's library. Although he borrowed much of this information from an earlier French work, they are still poignant and speak to the upbringing of the future president as he compiled this list at the age of 14.

Applewood Books version of the rules (and there are many even just looking on Amazon) is pocket-sized (4 1/4 x 6 3/4") and beautifully hardbound. My family is using this book as a supplement to our Homeschool curriculum as it includes many great nuggets that buck against the trend of the "anything goes" present day mannerisms.

From Library Journal
De Waal, author of several works of Benedictine spirituality, shares with the reader her own seven-day retreat using the writings and photographs of Thomas Merton as guide. De Waal has chosen judiciously from Merton and offers the enhancement of her own reflection on themes of God's call, human response, the true self, encounter with Christ, the demands of love (or finding God in other people), the ordinary (or finding God in nature), and integrating the retreat. Merton's themes of solitude and responsible concern for others come through clearly, as do De Waal's call for lived spirituality. This book makes an excellent guide for retreat or personal reflection. Highly recommended for seminary and public libraries.

A life changer
By Angela
I attended a week long retreat where we used this book as a guide. I am not a very religious person at all, but this book changed my life. Merton challenges us to die to our false selves, to open our hearts to God and to accept contemplation of the mystery of God and his creations as the center of our lives. As an introduction to Merton and as a daily spiritual guide, this book is priceless.

Helpful meditation-retreat for going into the heart with God...
By Peter Menkin
Today, again, I asked myself during centering prayer, to let my heart be open to God. This is the Christocentric God of the Trinity about which I speak. The book, "A Seven Day Journey with Thomas Merton" by Esther de Waal is an excellent exercise for home retreat that helps one come to opening the heart to God. The book does so in words, and it has photographs by Thomas Merton.

Irregardless, through the words or by looking at the photographs, one can find a way of looking at the world in the everyday and finding God. Set out as a seven day journey, take the book kindly and give it attention during the day, setting aside the time to go into the retreat. In the notes on Thomas Merton, the writer says, "The message of love, the primacy of love, this is the most basic definition of monastic life as Merton discovered it..." Thomas Merton was a man who lived a life of love, learning so much about it and Esther de Waal, a Benedictine, is a good person to help us along the way with this love that Thomas Merton knew.

She asks questions in the days of the retreat. In day one, she asks, "Who am I before God at this point in my life?" She goes on in an intimate way, teaching us to become intimate with God: "...I am overawed to think of the person that I am, that unique person, so lovingly created by God in all the fullness and riches of my own individuality, a person made to be His daughter, His son." Is this too close for some readers (what I think is these are starting points for considerations). So, as to being too close, I think not; the book is personal. If the reader has a starting point of relationship with God, and is not afraid to explore both the sensitive and open areas of relationships, he or she will find these more meaningful statements as time goes on. This is a book to be used more than once, is what becomes apparent.

Another thing this book helps with is the way of contemplation. As she quotes Thomas Merton, using his poetry throughout the book, we have a guide to help us in our spiritual exercise and quest. On "Day Three--The Solitary Within: The True Self" Merton is quoted: "What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves?" From Psalm 139 she quotes a response for this retreat exercise. "For it was you who created my being/knit me together in my mother's womb/I thank you for the wonder of my being,/for the wonders of all your creation."

"Day Four--Encounter With Christ" is the fourth day, and the central day of the retreat. Remember, this book is a retreat for seven days read a chapter at a time, day by day. The great gift Merton offers readers is a sharing of his experience in contemplation, his spiritual journey, and mostly his coming to know God. The book is kept under the section of books for "Spirituality/Prayer" and those interested will find that they too are with "..the Christ of God who in the spirit of his love lives in the people of God..." This is a book that is open to the reader, and open to people who are seekers of God who desire to pray. This is a prayerful book, need I say.

How religious is this book? I ask the question so that you as a reader will know that this is a book that is approachable. It "answers" the statement by John Cassian, in his "Conferences" which I am now reading about the relationship with God that a seeker may look for in his life. Even the advanced who are spiritually inclined will find this an approachable book by this measure of Cassian's: "...We ought to know where we should fix our mind's attention and to what goal we should always recall our soul's gaze." That can be an advanced question for many of us, and this book is helpful in meeting the statement's intent for one's life. This is a book that has life moving possibilities, one step at a time.

I would be missing a significant aspect of this book if I did not mention the photographs by Thomas Merton. One can say that one has seen his photographs, if one reads this book. Something worthwhile for an educated person in the 21st century. If you are a reader of the journal "Weavings" you may come to Thomas Merton's photographs better prepared for seeing the contemplative in everyday things. The Journal is a quarterly series of articles from Upper Room publications on such topics. "A Seven Day Journey with Thomas Merton" does a comprehensive job of helping one to see. Thomas Merton sees things in his world, and one must look at the photographs and then make the connection with the common things of ones world and life. That for me is a good entry point of understanding these photographs in a book that is a retreat.

A commentary on Thomas Merton by a woman who is well prepared and able to make such commentary, essentially this book is her interpretation of Merton's writings set as a retreat for people at home or use in a retreat setting away from home. With a foreword by Henri Nouwen, and photographs by Thomas Merton (including a most intriguing one of him next to a cross -- large, large one) on the cover, the title by Esther de Waal is published by Servant Publications of Ann Arbor, Michigan. I listened to a webcast some years ago, from Trinity Church in New York if memory is correct, when a woman editor with Publisher's Weekly said that one of the things that competed with Church life was good reading -- in other words books. This is one of those books that can compete with a retreat time away from home, and for me that was the value of it. I could have the book at home, use it for study and prayer on a seven day course and come closer to God in my relationship with Him by the book. This book is a good thing in the world.

More nourishing some days than others
By Mr. D. P. Jay
I once took a book by Merton on retreat, having heard so many sermons praising his insights. It was a big disappointment. Merton seems, for me, at is best when talking about social justice issues. Otherwise, his piety is too intense for me.

This book is designed for someone who cannot afford the time or money to go away on retreat. It is meant to provide enough food for thought and meditation for use at home. It succeeds in doing that, though some days are more nourishing than others.

One of the best insights, which we need to remind ourselves over and over again, is that we are called to be ourselves, not someone else. Also, the desire to please God does in fact please God and that `All we need is to experience what we already possess'. `Without some sort of solitude there is and can be no maturity' and we need `to be converted over again each hour.'

Before her injury, Lavinia had exchanged letters with a man she knew to be the love of her life – despite never having set eyes on him. But when she feared she’d be crippled for life, she made the heart-rending decision to let him go…

Randolph James Caulfield, Earl of Penwick, is betrothed, but cannot forget the words he once received from a woman whose name he knew, but who he never had the chance to meet. Great Read!!!

I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.
This is book four in the "Regency Charms" series by Anabelle Bryant. I have been reading in order of the book series but I do feel that this book can be a standalone book.
Lavinia Montgomery had been seriously hurt in a carriage accident that killed her parents. Lavinia was unable to walk and at the time felt that she wouldn't be able to again. Lavinia had been writing back and forth to a gentleman that she fell in love with win their letters. Lavinia had never met him and after the accident she didn't write him any.
Randolph James Caulfield, Earl of Penwick was just plan Randolph when used to be writing to a women named Lavinia but then he inherited the Title Of Earl of Penwick. This brought on more responsibility that took him to be more involved with the title. Later after not hearing from Lavinia and not able to find her he moved on to become engaged to another lady. Lavinia was able to get back her health and able to walk again. This brought on her sister to want to give her a coming out party and to bring her to the town. Their Lavinia started running into the Earl 0f Penwick but neither knew who the other person was.
This started their love story where they had to discover who they were and how they can now be together. I really enjoyed this book and hope that you will too.

Must-have for ur office
By Khalid Alnaqbi
10 years have passed and I'm still using this great dictionary ! It's one of the best English dictionaries ever produced. It's a comprehensive dictionary of current English, and is written in a straightforward and readable style.
Features:
- It has numerous encyclopedic articles covering a wide range of subjects e.g. current affairs, important people throughout history, science and technology, medicine, history, the arts, philosophy, mythology, sport, places like countries.
- Chronology of world historical events. Sometimes when I feel bored, I just open the dictionary and start to read this attractive section !
- It has some clear grammar and usage of a word (but not compared to Longman's Dictionary).
- It contains word origins, which makes me rush to open it if I want to learn more about the origin of a word.
- Appendices containing: Countries of the World, The Commonwealth, States of the USA, The British islets and constitution, The US constitution, the UN, the European Community, Kings and Queens of England and the UK, Prime Ministers and Presidents, World map section in color, and more !
Useful dictionary for your office or at home.
Enjoy using it.

A History of the Vietnamese (Cambridge Concise Histories), by K. W. Taylor

The history of Vietnam prior to the nineteenth century is rarely examined in any detail. In this groundbreaking work, K. W. Taylor takes up this challenge, addressing a wide array of topics from the earliest times to the present day - including language, literature, religion and warfare - and themes - including Sino-Vietnamese relations, the interactions of the peoples of different regions within the country, and the various forms of government adopted by Vietnam throughout its history. A History of the Vietnamese is based on primary source materials, combining a comprehensive narrative with an analysis which endeavours to see the Vietnamese past through the eyes of those who lived it. Taylor questions long-standing stereotypes and clichés about Vietnam, drawing attention to sharp discontinuities in Vietnam's past. Fluently written and accessible to all readers, this highly original contribution to the study of South-East Asia is a landmark text for all students and scholars of Vietnam.

Review
'This book is a landmark in scholarship, the product of Keith Taylor's four decades of intensive and prolonged engagement with Vietnam. There is no other book quite like it: it is the most authoritative work yet written on the full sweep of Vietnamese history. In these pages, stories from this past - whether of cannibals or kings, eunuchs or slaves, queen regents or revolutionaries - are woven into a rich historical account of the Vietnamese past. A magisterial achievement.' Shawn McHale, George Washington University

'Elegant, erudite and stunningly comprehensive, A History of the Vietnamese is, by a wide margin, the finest general survey of Vietnamese history ever produced in any language.' Peter Zinoman, University of California, Berkeley

About the Author
K. W. Taylor is a professor in the Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University, New York. His career began in the US Army, where he was deployed in the US-Vietnam war. I bought this Keith Taylor's excellent book on the History of the Vietnamese
By Kevin S Ernsting
I bought this Keith Taylor's excellent book on the History of the Vietnamese, because I love his earlier book The Birth of Viet Nam very much.
Professor Keith Taylor approached this history of the Vietnamese with a new and fresh optic very much different from the way Western & French and traditional Vietnamese historians wrote on the same topic.
Taylor emphasized the role the Chinese immigrants and their descendants played during the first 6 centuries AD, after the first war of Independence of Viet Nam leaded by the Trung sisters in 43 AD, a fact that was not elaborated at its just value by previous historians.
He discussed of the matrilocal - and probably matriarchal also - aspect of Viet Society during these earlier centuries, which explains why the first anti Chinese wars were leaded by female leaders like the Trung sisters in the First century and the Lady Trieu in the 3rd century AD.
Taylor shows us that one of the causes of the decline of the Ly dynasty, beside the weak personalities of the Ly kings, was the fact that maternal family played a predominance role in the government for many years.
Ho Quy Ly - Le Quy Ly by his previous name - the man who overthrew the last king of the Tran dynasty in the last years of the XIV century was seen as a ruthless but very efficient state man who tried very hard - but unsuccessfully - to reform the Vietnamese society in the beginning of the XV century. Ho Quy Ly was splendid in his conquests of southern regions of Viet Nam but ran into troubles by the early and over-aggressive hegemonic policy of the Ming emperor.
Probably the political landscape of Vietnamese XV century would be very much different if Ho Quy Ly had a few more years to consolidate his new government before the Chinese Ming invaded Viet Nam. His plan to convert coins money into paper money was a good one but required much more time to implement.
I believe that Taylor's view was influenced partly by the excellent researches of his old friend from the U of Michigan John Whitmore who wrote his doctorate thesis on Ho Quy Ly.
I believe this is a very good history book on Viet Nam.
I feel bad that Taylor does not give us any footnote to help us locate the proper reference on many of his points of view on historical facts. The very long bibliography at the end of the book is overwhelming but a difficult maze to navigate.
It is excellent that Taylor is good in reading and interpreting the chữ Nôm - an old logographic script of the old Vietnamese language - which enabled him to decipher the many scriptures carved in stone steles dating from the first millennium in Viet Nam. This gives us a different view of History when compared side by side with the official Chinese history books.
I will advise anybody interested in the History of Viet Nam to buy this excellent book

Oh sweet knowledge fists of fury understanding!
By Bun Bo Hue
Oh, sweet heavens, this book is dry, filled with an overwhelming amount of research, and is intimidating in it's size and scope. The writer has no literary style. But I love it so!

If you have any interest in Vietnamese history you have to buy this book and read it, cover to cover. Then do it again. It's that good!

The Rock Star's Email Order Bride (Romance Island Resort Series Book 2), by Demelza Carlton

A mail order bride and a rock god: can they make fairy tales come true?
In the final year of her business degree, Phuong has her future all mapped out. Finish studying, then go home and save her family's business. Until her father dies and it all falls apart. Broke and jobless, she stumbles on a solution: find herself an Australian husband. Fast.

She's not looking for love - Phuong doesn't believe in fairy tales. Her marriage will be a business deal, pure and simple. But when she meets her husband-to-be and discovers he's a reclusive rock star living at Romance Island Resort, maybe it's time to believe a girl can live happily ever after.

A tiny taste of what's in store:

Idly, she clicked on one of the unread messages from some other man whose profile was a sculpted, headless torso, like something cropped from the cover of a romance novel.

Mr Six-Pack's message was short:

"I'm looking for a woman who knows all fairy tales are lies, but who still hopes one might come true."

Reflexively, Phuong clicked on his profile. Mr Six-Pack was a gym junkie, he admitted, who went by the name of Lucky Jason. He worked on a remote island, but it was lonely and he wanted to share his living accommodation with someone who could brighten the darkness at night. Or so he said. She laughed softly before clapping a hand over her mouth at the thought that she might wake Norman. His snores continued, like he was sawing down a tree with his nose in his sleep, so she breathed a sigh of relief and returned to ogling Jason's abs. Desire flooded through her for the first time in months.

She hit the reply button. "Which fairy tale did you have in mind, and which character are you? The big bad wolf, the woodcutter or Prince Charming?" Before she could think better of it, she sent the message.

The response came back almost instantly: "What would you like me to be? I can cut down everyone keeping you from me, carry you off to my castle like Prince Charming, then turn into the big bad wolf and eat you all up until you scream for joy."

"That only happens in books," she whispered to herself, then typed the words and fired them off.

Lucky Jason had an answer for that, too: "One day, some romance author will write books about us and a million lonely women will crave the sort of sex you only have to ask for."

Arrogant much? "No one's that good. What if I'm after Prince Charming, a man who loves me, listens to me and wants to take care of me, and I'm not interested in sex?"

"Prince Charming is a prick who'll smother you and turn jealous if you look at anyone else. He'll lock you in a tower and never let you out. And he wouldn't know what to do with his own c*ck, let alone your body. Prince where-do-I-put-my-prick. That's not me, babe."

"No? You don't get jealous? What do you do when your girl looks at another man?"

"Grin and wink at the guy while my arm's around her. He'll never be me and never have what I do, but that's cool. Not everyone's as awesome as me. Let me show you, babe."

About the Author
Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.
She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.
Sensationalist spin? No - Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all.
Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world.
The Ocean's Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by the Nightmares trilogy. She swears the Mel Goes to Hell series ambushed her on a crowded train and wouldn't leave her alone.

Hoping for happily ever after with Jason and Audra. I am totally disappointed. Not as good as the first book.

Jay Redeemed
By Ngaruawahia Girl
I thought at the end of the last Rock Star book that Jay was definitely not someone I’d ever like to meet. He would be the kind of star you crushed on until that moment he opened his mouth. This novel sees him in all his raw inadequacy with a touch of refreshing comedy. One of my favourite laugh-out-loud bits was when he was asked to leave and handcuffed himself to a potted palm with his fluffy pink cuffs. When nobody was looking he dragged the palm along a series of corridors to where he wanted to be anyway and stayed there all night, still handcuffed to it, despite having the key and having left a trail of dirt along his route. He’s hilarious.

This novel touches upon the very sad realities for Mail Order Brides and what life sometimes becomes for them. They end up as the prisoners of sex predators, prostituting themselves in return for citizenship or visas. It’s not until the end that the reader gets to see how well this has been set up right from the start of the first book. I understand now why I was meant to hate Jay Felix, why he bought the resort and where the series has the potential to go. There’s a neat cluster of characters now who have the potential to be more than extras and become contributing members of the cast in a series which could go on for many books to come. Well written as always and enjoyable to the last word.

A Book to Remember/Don't pass this one up
By rebecca davison
This story was truly fantastic! It's one where the characters stick with you for a long time. The romance oozes from the pages. At times you'll be laughing your socks off. I won't give any spoilers but I will say I don't usually read these types of books as I usually read mostly paranormal and fantasy romance. This book is actuality realistic, I think anyway. I have already devoured her other books in this series and wasn't left wanting and neither will you. So click it open and read, its that simple, after all, I truly understand how hard it us to find those unique stories out their you browse for. This is one of them.
