Since the formative period of Islamic law, jurists have debated whether it is acceptable for a law to be selected based on its utility, rather than weighing conflicting articulations of the law to determine the most likely expression of the divine will. Virtually unanimous opposition to the utilitarian approach, referred to as “pragmatic eclecticism,” emerged among early Islamic jurists. However, due to a host of changing institutional and socioeconomic transformations, a trend toward the legitimization of pragmatic eclecticism arose in the thirteenth century. Subsequently, the Mamluk authorities institutionalized this pragmatism when Sultan Baybars appointed four chief judges representing the four Sunni schools in Cairo in 1265 CE. After a brief attempt to reverse Mamluk pluralism by imposing the Hanafi school in the sixteenth century, Egypt’s new rulers, the Ottomans, embraced this pluralistic pragmatism. In examining over a thousand cases from three seventeenth- and eighteenthcentury Egyptian courts, Ibrahim traces the internal logic of pragmatic eclecticism
under the Ottomans. An array of archival sources documents the manner in which Egyptian society’s subaltern classes navigated Sunni legal pluralism as a tool to avoid more austere legal doctrines. The ensuing portrait challenges the assumption made by many modern historians that the utilitarian approaches adopted by nineteenth- and twentieth-century Muslim reformers constituted a clear rupture with early Islamic legal history. In contrast, many of the legal strategies
exercised in Egypt’s partial codification of family law in the twentieth century were rooted in premodern Islamic jurisprudence.

I really enjoyed the book. As I've gotten to know Meredith through the past few years, I've come to appreciate her knowledge, her wisdom, and her wit. Not only does she make me laugh, she really makes me think about my life's journey, and she really makes me think about life's existential questions: "Who Am I?" and "Why am I here?"

At some point in the past, organized religion answered those questions for me. But, as many people, like me, describe themselves as spiritual but not religious, I'm looking to try to answer those questions looking away from organized religion, and looking in other directions. This book helps you find your own way, and where you end up, is up to you...

Meaningful book about spirituality

This little book arrived, and I thought, "Oh, good! I'll be able to get this read in no time!" Except...no. Don't be deceived! This little book packs a big punch.

Each chapter is rich, so I took my time to savor each one. Im a pastor, and I'm pretty well-versed in the methodologies Gould describes, but I found myself re-discovering some that I had forgotten long ago. I got to the end of the book and found myself longing for reconnection to some of these practices.

Gould writes in a familiar style, one that is genuine and doesn't mince words. That gives this book an accessibility for those not familiar with spiritual practices.

About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

The Knights Templar

This book is remarkable and definately not for everyone. Steiner is a brilliant man and his understanding of the deeper levels of human consciousness are astonishing. That said, either the English translation or the fact that this volume was compiled from several people's lecture notes makes the text at times nearly impenetrable. It took me mumerous readings to be able to fully take it in. It is well worth the effort, but not an easy read. Even with these reservations it is the best book on the Templars I've read.

The Holy Mighty Underground Stream of Light

Steiner's lectures were comprehensive gnostic doctrines in miniature, the value of which can not be overestimated. In the Anthroposophic Theosophy of the Kingdom of Light on the way and in Progress that Steiner presents in his talks to initiates, we can see encapsulated something of God's grand design for life and in our corner of the universe. Eternity lies stretched out before us and pivotal components of that plan laid out in epochs. It seems to me that too much was eliminated from some of the lectures in this book, and I find it difficult to believe that no one was able to find the few missing stanzas not included between the pages. However, that said, the choices are orderly, sensible and the overall impact impressive.

About the Author
Stephanie Arnold received her B.A. degree in English from Stanford University and then continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin where she received an M.F.A. degree in directing and a Ph.D. in dramatic literature and theory. Before joining the Lewis & Clark College faculty in 1986, she taught at Mills College and the University of California, Riverside.

Stephanie Arnold teaches acting, directing, and dramatic literature including a special topics course in Latino Theatre. The productions she has directed include works by classical and contemporary playwrights as well as musicals and opera. She is currently at work on the fifth edition of her textbook, The Creative Spirit: An Introduction to Theatre, which is published by McGraw-Hill and in use at colleges and universities around the country. She has recently returned from leading the Lewis & Clark College off campus study program to New York City.

Creative way to teach Theatre to Non Majors

The class I teach is called APPROACHING THE ARTS: THEATRE. The University also offers Introduction to Theatre. I use this book because it contains the complete text of six good plays. Plays are the cornerstone of theater. Ms. Arnold uses these plays to demonstrate how different theatre artists approach their art. For instance there is a chapter on the Playwright that uses August Wilson's play JOE TURNER HAS COME AND GONE to teach how a playwright approaches writing a play, and what inspires a playwright. She uses each play to teach a part of theatre: acting, design, etc. I highly recommend this book as a means to get non theater people interested in making theater a life long habit.

I am new to the theatre, but had to take this class as a requirement. This book was very interesting and informative. If you are new to the art of theatre, then this book is for you. If you have to take it because it's required, don't worry, you'll enjoy the book. It was easy to read and understand as it was enjoyable.

The scientific explanation for mind vs heart situations

There are two phrases, among others, that I like to live by. The first is "if you don't like something change it, if you can't change it change your attitude towards it." And the second one is "you can't control how you feel, but you can control how you react to it." These two phrases have Chimp Paradox written all over it, and this book is pretty much the great elaboration of the phrases.

Derive his fact-based theories from neurological researches and decades of experience, Prof Steve Peters analyses the mechanism of the brain between the Frontal (the logical Human), the Limbic (the emotional Chimp) and Parietal (the memory-storing Computer), and how different functions of these 3 can conflict and/or complement each others to produce our thinking process and decision making process.

Surprisingly, for such a complex subject matter this book is really a light reading, which is written in a simple and concise way using easy to digest symbols, diagrams and bullet points. But yet, when I tried to read more on neuobiology as a follow up, I can somehow keep up with the complicated and serious stuff thanks to the understanding from this book.

It is by far the book that I highlighted the most, with every single line seems to be important, and it is so psychologically spot on that it feels like it is tailored on the conflicts between my own Human and Chimp. It also gives me huge understanding on how to differentiate between the Human and the Chimp in people around me (and how to engage to them accordingly), and it even has given me a clear and simple solutions to some of my, my family's, and friends' real problems. 5 stars!

Foundation of life book, a must read for the entire human population

First heard of this book while watching the 2011 Tour de France, as the British cycling team continued to outperform their rivals, partly due to their application of the principles of this book. Each chapter develops parts of the framework of our mind and gives easy to remember insights into how our each part works - for us - and against us - if not managed properly. There are constant flow of "ah-ha" insights for my life, and I am happier, healthier and more productive. I have given out 35 of these books to family, friends and co-workers. This should be taught in schools from pre-K through college, and I'm hoping for a YouTube webinar of the highlights.

The Chimp Paradox gives great insight into the 'chimp' and 'human' living inside each of us. It really helps the reader understand why we sometimes make the choices we do (even though we don't want to!). This knowledge may help the reader to make provision for those times and therefore help you make better choices. If you know how the 'chimp' operates and how you can help the 'human' get control without neglecting the 'chimp', you're bound to be less impulsive and reactive.

This is a great read for anybody in business, but also for those interested in self-development and being more in control of their lives.

I LOVE THIS BOOK

I purchased this book for my newly adopted 5 year old daughter who has a lot of behavioral issues. She needs constant, nonstop, 24 hour, 7 day a week attention and it is nerve grinding. :( My husband and I have tried to give her as much attention as we can and then we have tried to explain (over and over and over and over and over...) why she cannot have attention at all times. Needless to say it wasn't working and she was willing to take ANY attention she could get; good attention, bad attention, just as long as she was the focus it didn't matter how she got there. UGH We even have a therapist who has tried to address the issues, her teacher has tried to correct her on the issue, but to no avail-she was bound and determined to continue demanding attention at all times.
I saw this book online and felt I had nothing to lose by trying it, I'm so glad I did. Somehow this book got through to her. The first week we read it once a day and then as needed (like a cough suppressant lol). We tapered to 2 x a week and as needed, then she started asking for us to read it (more attention, but hey!). Soon she started referencing the book when she would be reminded about demanding attention in the wrong way. Soon we were also referencing the book and now we can go for 20-30 minutes without her demanding attention. She can actually sit and occupy herself with a doll, project or toy without demanding we draw for her or play with her or do the project for her. She now says excuse me when she interrupts our conversations and will sometimes even wait til we finish talking before saying what she wants to say. It's like a miracle! lol

I would recommend this book for any adult dealing with a child with minor or even extreme needy behaviors. The book is easy to read, easy to understand and give very basic examples that kids (and parents) can relate to. When we read this book, I felt like someone had been spying on us and then wrote this book-it fit that well. :)

Excellent Book

This is an excellent book.
Buy it before it goes out of print! I have two books in this series and would like to purchase more but they are OUT OF PRINT.
This is one of the few books that teaches children about developing good character traits without being preachy or condescending (or resorting to "fairy tales" - - things that happened in a faraway place and time which have no bearing on today). The children can relate and they enjoy the stories.

5/22/03 The book " Needing Attention"(copyright 1996) explains to the child(ren) why they might feel the need to get attention;reviews the wrong ways they might do so(e.g. complaining,tattling,teasing) and the right ways to get attention without actually saying the words "I'd like some attention".Some of the others(now out of print by Berry from the "Help Me Be Good Series"copyright 1988) use the same method in helping the child(ren) to understand ways to correct such habits as individual books on Tattling,Lying,Interrupting,Throwing Tantrums,Teasing,Fighting,Breaking Promises,Being Bossy,Being Bullied..There are more to the out-of print series which can sometimes "show-up" at community flea markets as did the ones I purchased.
