Lonely Planet has published a travel guide on Israel, or to be more precise, on Israel and the "Palestinian Territories", for many years. They typically update the guide every 2 or 3 years, sometimes it's four years. The new 2015 edition updates the one that was issued in 2012.

"Lonely Planet: Israel and the Palestinian Territories" (2015 publications; 440 pages) starts off with a general 40 page "Plan Your Trip" Section, including the "top 20" of must-see/can't miss sites (with plenty of full-color pictures of all 20), and other general travel trips (such as the important "Crossing Borders" insights). Then we get to the `meat and potatoes' of this guide, a 300 page section which brings highlights of the various regions (Lonely Planet has divided it up in 10 regions, such as Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Lower Galilee & Sea of Galilee, and later on The Dead Sea, The Negev, West Bank, and Petra). I read a number of those sections with great interest. Very impressed with the nitty-gritty details provided in this guide, down to the layout of various sites and even just individual buildings. The next section of the book is the 50 page "Understand", where the Lonely Planet editors try and give us a sense where things stand nowadays as between Israel and Palestine. Such a write-up could be disastrous but the editors did a good job finding a proper balance (even recommending `best films', and `best non-fiction' on the matter, such as the 2013 book "My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel" by Ari Schavit). The last section of the book is the 40 page "Survival Guide", with tons of uber-practical tips ("what to do in a missile or rocket attack", etc.). Bottom line: this book is contains TONS of great travel advice, and is richly illustrated in full-color pictures and maps.

I had the great fortune of visiting Israel a few years ago. I can honestly say that it was one of the very best trips I have taken in my life. The historical sites are jaw-droppingly beautiful (make sure to visit the Dead Sea and nearby Masada, in addition to the sites in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem). I must also point out that I never felt unsafe in the slightest while there. (I did not visit Palestine, so I cannot vouch for the chapters on the West Bank and Petra.) This trip far exceeded all expectations on every level, and truly memorable. If you are preparing for a trip to Israel, you could do a lot worse than reading this particular travel guide. "Lonely Planet: Israel and the Palestinian Territories" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Great guide. Except it was updated in June 2015

Great guide. Except it was updated in June 2015, and failed to mention mineral beach Dead Sea is closed due to sink holes! Besides this, which lead me to Ein Gedi (awesome) and eventually Kalia beach, great guide and I will use this company again.

About the Author
Edward R. Brown (M.Div., Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) is founding director of Care of Creation, Inc., an environmental mission agency dedicated to mobilizing the church around the world to respond to the environmental crisis. An ordained minister, he grew up in Pakistan in a missionary family. He previously served as pastor of the Protestant International Church in Islamabad, Pakistan, as InterVarsity Link administrator for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and as Chief Operating Officer for the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies.

biblical, practical, and hopeful

With fewer than 200 pages, Our Father's World is a handbook individuals, groups, classes, or committees could study to increase their own awareness and participation in caring for all creation as well as helping create opportunities for others around them to do so. Ed Brown cautions us the environmental crisis is a crisis of population, of prosperity, of poverty, and of spirituality. He essentially writes from and to a North American context, yet clearly describes an interdependent world where contentment with micro living space in one city effectively may degrade waters and forests in another country some distance away. Although he does not propose a one-size-fits-all creation care and environmental stewardship solution, the author wisely says we need to get beyond apparent symptoms. He describes creation as "sacred" rather than divine [page 49], creation itself as sacred worship space--a theme presented at several points in the book. I especially enjoyed chapter 8 on "Creation-Caring Worship," with suggestions as to how we can sing and pray alongside creation.

The book is in two basic sections: The Message, "Why the Church Must Care for Creation"; and The Mission, "Mobilizing the Church to Care for Creation," and without a doubt, we need to do this together. I love his words at the end of chapter 6, Ambassadors of Redemption: "It's this very hybrid character of the church that allows it to bring something unique to the real problems of the environmental crisis. The church can deliver spiritual power to practical problems."

Brown comes from a relatively conservative evangelical background rather than a fundamentalist or mainline one, but I cannot imagine any person of any or no faith tradition not appreciating his analysis and his ideas for helping solve the crisis. This is a book for all generations!

Everyone, but especially church goers would be enlightened by reading this book. Climate changes are not to be ignored or denied. We are responsible to care for the earth we have been made custodians of.

excellent understanding of God and creation!

I read this book in small chunks to absorb the message. Creation is not our object, to be used by us for our own good, but rather, created with us, and suffering or prospering with us. Although I have long been an environmentalist, this helped me have a new theological basis for this commitment. I continue to be astonished as I re-read the scriptures at how the fate of the animals and plants is tied to our obedience to God. No wonder creation longs for the day when the sons and daughters of God will be revealed.

WELL-BALANCED

'Prophetess of Health' is a well-balanced, thoroughly-researched, scholarly book. It is neither apologetic nor polemical. It is nn eye- and a mind-opening mine of information.

The work has succeeded admirably in doing what the author set out to do: place Mrs E. G. White firmly within the context of health reform in the 18th century, and show her invaluable contribution, among other health reformers, to the popularizing of that reform, even though her audience might have been different from theirs.

If in achieving this, he unmasks the intrigue and other unsavoury actions of some E. G. White apologists, it is a necessary side effect of uncovering the truth.

A Remarkable History Of A Remakable Woman

First, I should say that I know a lot about Ellen White. I've read several of her books (some of which are quite interesting). I'm a graduate of Loma Linda Medical School, a Seventh Day Adventist school originally founded by Mrs. White. And I've even been to her house in Napa Valley, near St. Helena, California, where she had many of her "visions of the night." Ellen White was the prophet whose writings helped establish the SDA church in the 1800s. Seventh Day Adventists believe in "the spirit of prophecy," which is to say they believe God didn't stop communicating with mankind in ancient times, but rather selects certain prophets through history when a new "message" is needed (though, they seem to believe Ellen White is the only one since the early days of Christianity). In their theology, a great emphasis is placed on the Biblical books of Daniel and Revelation, which are seen to contain prophecies particularly applicable to our contemporary times. They are sometimes considered a "cult," which I think is mere bigotry. It's more accurate to see them more in line with evangelical or fundamental Christian denominations, with a few unique doctrinal beliefs.
Given that Ellen White is considered by most Adventists as second only the Bible with regards to literal inspiration, this book by Ron Numbers is seen as nothing short of blasphemy. The General Conference of Seventh Day Adventists allowed Numbers access to their vault of unpublished materials, only to find themselves "betrayed" by his ultimate conclusions. How dare he suggest that many of White's "visions" were actually copied word-for-word from some of the books in her personal library! And how dare he suggest she was used as a "pawn" in the hands of the all-male leaders of the original SDA church in trying to establish their legitimacy! In my own view, whatever the truth in these things, Numbers diminishes White a bit more than she deserves. Yet, it's hard to argue with the evidence he presents. The problem (perpetrated by the SDAs themselves) is that we're trying to interpret events of a hundred or more years ago in the light of our current "values." This is, after all, the era of "zero tolerance." Am I right, or am I right?
In this book, Ron Numbers presents a fascinating history of the Seventh Day Adventist church. From their earliest origins following the "Great Disappointment" of 1844, Numbers follows the difficult development of a new religion. They faced more than a few crises along the way. Far from the least of these was the powerful personality of John Harvey Kellogg. Yes, this is the Kellogg of the Kellogg's cereal company. Yes, he was an early Seventh Day Adventist. But Kellogg's was rather different in those days. His company was first started in an effort to produce natural health foods, as promoted by Mrs. White. (There's even an interesting anecdote in which some guy named Post toured Kellogg's factory, and Kellogg's stance that he was unconcerned that Post would copy what he was doing, as this would further the health message he so strongly believed in.) Yet, Kellogg became a "problem" to those early Adventists. He wanted more power than they were willing to grant him. Needless to say, he's now considered an "apostate" by contemporary Adventists. This is just one of several episodes that Numbers chronicles with revealing accuracy. No wonder this book was found so alarming by "the powers that be" in the 1970s SDA church!
I'm not an Adventist, in case you're wondering. But, I find these kinds of histories more than a little fascinating. Given the context, Numbers was a brave man to put this in print when he did. I'm also rather proud, in a way, that Numbers wrote this book when he was an Assistant Professor of the History of Medicine and the History of Science at the University of Wisconsin...right here in Madison! This is probably a book you'll have no interest in at all, if the history of religion is a lost topic for you. But, if you've read this far in my review, you just might discover a few items here that will reward your searching. If your goal is hostile anti-Adventism...forget it! You'll find what you want here, but what a petty argument you're pursuing. Take a broader view. See this in the context of the whole of history. What a fascinating development!

About the Author
David Joselit is Assistant Professsor of Art History at UCLA, Irvine. She organized Jenny Holzer's first US museum exhibition and catalogue, and her books include the Bruce Nauman catalogue raisonne (1994) and Ann Hamilton (1998). Renata Salecl is a Slovenian cultural theorist and philosopher. Her many books include The Spoils of Freedom: Psychoanalysis and Feminism after the Fall of Socialism (1994) and Voice and Gaze as Love Objects (1996).

Jenny Holzer- Protect me from what I can't see

Have you ever stopped to think how many times we are bombarded by truisms everyday? Get this book and you will get a clue. In the Truisms series over exposure to banality reveals how numbed out we all are. Take a cliche like "Children are the hope to the future" and place beside "Children are the most cruel of all". We say and repeat these truisms but do we really realize that they are empty in themselves ? Do we perceive the contradictions ? How we mold reality to suit our needs ? Truisms sooth us with the cushioned feeling of the "generally accepted truth". Jenny Holzer literally splashes intimate thoughts, truisms, activist slogans over the landscape. These truths, half-truths and huge lies stare out at us in billboards, park benches like a conscience made physical. This is art made on the very border of reality and language.

Fantastic coverage of a fantastic artist.

As a former corporate research scientist myself, I loved Mr. Lee's direct, clear approach to relaying what is and what is not known about LPR. Although not very much is understood about LPR at this time, he advises the reader how to stay informed about new developments.

Great technical information but not soloution

If you want to understand LPR, and I mean really understand it in detail, this is a great book. You'll walk away with a much greater understanding of what LPR is, the physiology, the chemistry, etc.

As I read it, I kept waiting for solution to LPR, but it never came.

Excellent source of information for LPR sufferers

If you have LPR there is a good chance you feel very frustrated with what the medical community has to offer. This book does a fantastic job of taking all the data available and presenting it in a fashion that is easy to read while still keeping the nitty gritty details. In addition to the book the author maintains a blog that is regularly updated with new materials and information about LPR.

I highly recommend this book.

An Informative, Introductory Book

I utilize Profit Without Honor as one of the required textbooks in an college course I teach at Herkimer County Community College entitled CJ 122: Intoduction to Economic Crime Investigation.
I find the book is quite comprehensive, extensively researched and very well written. There is just enough theoretical foundations along with a true plethora of historical and recent examples to educate and inform. My students have received the book very well, commenting that while it is far reaching it is also a fairly easy "read" that isn't to confusing or overwhelming. It's my opinion that Profit Without Honor is an excellent introductory text to aquaint the casual reader or the student with the far reaching, comprehensive nature of economic crime, white collar crime and fraud present today.
I look forward to a third edition when recent incidents such as Enron, Arthur Anderson, WorldCom etc. would hopefully be addressed.
As a side note, the fraud realted quotes from motion pictures that serve as chapter headings are hilarious! (i.e. Teacher: What is the capital of Nebraska? First Student: Lincoln. Teacher: Right. Who freeded the slaves? Second Student: Lincoln Teacher: Right. Charles Keating cooked the books at what S&L? Third Student: Lincoln?)
