basic puzzles

i can keep this short; this book is very very basic. each tactic is explained in a couple of sentences and two examples. then there follow a dozen or so puzzles that range from extremely easy to... easy. i think its sort of a childrens tactics book. im really a beginner at chess - beginner beginner but these puzzles i mostly solved within a minute while watching a movie. assuming that youve read some introduction-to-chess book this book will give you very few new information or concepts, but a couple of easy puzzles.

Basic Beginning Tactics Book

The author, Fred Reinfeld was known 30-40 years ago as being the author with the largest number of chess books on the market. He was a reasonably strong player and wrote some rather fine books. This is a book where you will find the same problems, without the detail and explanation in his "1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations" - the difference is two fold,

1. You get explanation of the tactics here (good point).

2. Far fewer problems (bad point).

3. His most simple problems to solve - good if you are a beginner or just above.

If you are well beyond the beginning stage get his "One Thousand and One Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations", or "Winning Chess Traps for Juniors". They are not for the super beginner and will get you further quickly.

a really great book for players who are looking to move beyond the basic moves

I came to this book knowing only the basic moves of chess. After finishing this book I was able to see many opportunities I had missed before. This book presents basic chess tactics in the form of puzzles. Each chapter is devoted to one type of situation that arises frequently during play. Solving the ten or so puzzles offered in each chapter gives you the ability to spot similar opportunities when they arise during play. The chapters on discovered check and removing the guard are especially useful. The only drawback to this book is that the answers are given in the old style chess notation. However, there is a tutorial for reading this type of notation at the beginning of the book. As there is no "search inside" for old books like this, I will list the table of contents below.

Just like any other of Amy Tan's books

Like any other of Amy Tan's books, this book focuses on the contrast between traditional Chinese culture and the liberal life of first generation Asian-Americans. The book has significant historical references in it that help contribute to the liablity of the book. The book focuses on the relationship of Pearl and her mother, Winnie. The book showed how some Chinese men, during World War II, were very dominate over their wives. The book tended to get lengthy at times referring to irrelevent topics. The book could have just as well without.

It is a very moving novel.

The novel, "The Kitchen God's Wife," has an excellent story which leads the reader to become emotionally or directly involved with the main characters in the novel. The way it is written in first person gives an insight into Chinese married life which many people may not have known. The great miseries which the main characters undergo hit the reader right in the heart, so it is clear to see why I have found this book so enjoyable. Truly an excellent novel.

Should be more concise as an introductory look into a CQC shooting system

This book was ok. It does not give many specifics regarding grip positioning, sight alignment or sight acquisition. The pictures give you some idea of the body positioning and grip alignment on the weapon but without written backing your assessments well have to do. The book does give some scenario advice regarding color coding danger areas but I'd rather have had greater details regarding grip, sight alignment, sight picture acquisition, foot mover etc.

I like the overall idea of this CQC system but this book misses in some fundamental ways.

A little short however, if one can think out side the box and realize that this method could be used in certain scenarios with better results than the traditional "ways" then purchase. If you are a ninja then you probably do not even need handgun training much less to learn anything new.

What a strange man

I was very intrigued with Howard Hughes's life and got exactly what I asked for....I soaked up every word until I realized I was reading a book about a
very disturbed man which is fine but there is so much repetition about his deals ..he was a unscrupulous person...I can only handle so much of his whining.

Unshrouds the mystery with facts, not speculations

The Life, Legend, and Madness offers an in-depth view into the secretive life of Howard Hughes. Unbiased in its writing, the book focuses on all of Hughes accomplishments and successes, as well as some of the darker aspects of his life. After reading this book, one can really see that Hughes is one of the few "larger than life" characters that ever lived.

Hughes played an integral role in shaping this country, a role unknown to many of today's younger generations. Donald Barlett and James Steele do an amazing job detailing both his accomplishments and private life. Some of his endeavors are less obvious today than others, such as helping transform Las Vegas into the resort town we know today. Many people are unfamiliar with the Hughes Medical Institute or the creations from the Hughes Aircraft Company. Although the book does show his odd lifestyle behind the darkened windows and closed doors, it is fair in that it also accurately focuses on his important business dealings.

The popular movie "The Aviator" seems to be scripted largely from the first half of this book. To fully appreciate the movie, I recommend reading this particular book first. Not only will it help clarify references that may slip by in the movie, but this book shows that Hughes was much more than a movie producer who flirted with Hollywood's divas of the day. He was a master engineer, expert businessman, and defender of Democracy (he furiously fought Communists). Innovative people like Hughes is what America is all about.

This is the first book I had read about Mr. Hughes. A wonderful book. At times slightly more detailed than I would like.. Buts lots of great information about truly one of the most interesting characters of the 20th century.
