Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human, by Richard Wrangham

Ever since Darwin and The Descent of Man, the existence of humans has been attributed to our intelligence and adaptability. But in Catching Fire, renowned primatologist Richard Wrangham presents a startling alternative: our evolutionary success is the result of cooking. In a groundbreaking theory of our origins, Wrangham shows that the shift from raw to cooked foods was the key factor in human evolution. When our ancestors adapted to using fire, humanity began. Once our hominid ancestors began cooking their food, the human digestive tract shrank and the brain grew. Time once spent chewing tough raw food could be sued instead to hunt and to tend camp. Cooking became the basis for pair bonding and marriage, created the household, and even led to a sexual division of labor. Tracing the contemporary implications of our ancestors’ diets, Catching Fire sheds new light on how we came to be the social, intelligent, and sexual species we are today. A pathbreaking new theory of human evolution, Catching Fire will provoke controversy and fascinate anyone interested in our ancient origins—or in our modern eating habits.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Contrary to the dogmas of raw-foods enthusiasts, cooked cuisine was central to the biological and social evolution of humanity, argues this fascinating study. Harvard biological anthropologist Wrangham (Demonic Males) dates the breakthrough in human evolution to a moment 1.8 million years ago, when, he conjectures, our forebears tamed fire and began cooking. Starting with Homo erectus—who should perhaps be renamed Homo gastronomicus—these innovations drove anatomical and physiological changes that make us adapted to eating cooked food the way cows are adapted to eating grass. By making food more digestible and easier to extract energy from, Wrangham reasons, cooking enabled hominids' jaws, teeth and guts to shrink, freeing up calories to fuel their expanding brains. It also gave rise to pair bonding and table manners, and liberated mankind from the drudgery of chewing (while chaining womankind to the stove). Wrangham's lucid, accessible treatise ranges across nutritional science, paleontology and studies of ape behavior and hunter-gatherer societies; the result is a tour de force of natural history and a profound analysis of cooking's role in daily life. More than that, Wrangham offers a provocative take on evolution—suggesting that, rather than humans creating civilized technology, civilized technology created us. (June)

“[A] fascinating study… Wrangham’s lucid, accessible treatise ranges across nutritional science, paleontology and studies of ape behavior and hunter-gatherer societies; the result is a tour de force of natural history and a profound analysis of cooking’s role in daily life.”

Kirkus Reviews
“An innovative argument that cooked food led to the rise of modern Homo sapiens.... Experts will debate Wrangham’s thesis, but most readers will be convinced by this lucid, simulating foray into popular anthropology.”

The Harvard Brain
“With clear and engaging prose, Catching Fire addresses a key and enduring scientific issue central to the quest to understand our species. It offers new insights for anyone interested in human evolution, history, anthropology, nutrition, and for everyone interested in food."

Edward O. Wilson, Harvard University
“In this thoroughly researched and marvelously well written book, Richard Wrangham has convincingly supplied a missing piece in the evolutionary origin of humanity.”

Matt Ridley, author of Genome and The Agile Gene
“Cooking completely transformed the human race, allowing us to live on the ground, develop bigger brains and smaller mouths, and invent specialized sex roles. This notion is surprising, fresh and, in the hands of Richard Wrangham, utterly persuasive. He brings to bear evidence from chimpanzees, fossils, food labs, and dieticians. Big, new ideas do not come along often in evolution these days, but this is one.”

Steven Raichlen, author of The Barbecue Bible and How to Grill; host of Primal Grill
“A book of startling originality and breathtaking erudition. Drawing on disciplines as diverse as anthropology, sociology, biology, chemistry, physics, literature, nutrition, and cooking, Richard Wrangham addresses two simple but very profound questions: How did we evolve from Australopithecus to Homo sapiens, and what makes us human? The answer can be found at your barbecue grill and I dare say it will surprise you…”

Michael Pollan, author of In Defense of Food and The Omnivore's Dilemma
“Catching Fire is convincing in argument and impressive in its explanatory power. A rich and important book.”

Seed Magazine
“…makes a convincing case for the importance of cooking in the human diet, finding a connection between our need to eat cooked food in order to survive and our preference for soft foods. The popularity of Wonderbread, the digestion of actual lumps of meat, and the dangers of indulging our taste buds all feature in this expository romp through our gustatory evolution.”

Discover Magazine
“…fascinating…”

The New York Times
“‘Catching Fire’ is a plain-spoken and thoroughly gripping scientific essay that presents nothing less than a new theory of human evolution...one that Darwin (among others) simply missed.”

Slate.com
“Brilliant… a fantastically weird way of looking at evolutionary change.”

The San Francisco Chronicle
“As new angles go, it's pretty much unbeatable.”

The Washington Post
“Wrangham draws together previous studies and theories from disciplines as diverse asanthropology, biology, chemistry, sociology and literature into a cogent and compelling argument.”

Texas Observer
“Wrangham’s attention to the most subtle of behaviors keeps the reader enrapt…a compelling picture, and one that I now contemplate every time I turn on my stove."

Providence Journal
“Richard Wrangham presents this thesis in a concise, cogent, and accessible way.”

The New York Times Book Review
“A new theory of human evolution – ‘the cooking hypothesis’ – is related in plain-spoken, gripping language.”

While I did enjoy reading Dr
By Brian A. Sparr
Dr. Richard Wrangham, renowned primatologist and Ruth B. Moore Professor of Biological Anthropology at Harvard University, goes against the grain in this book with his assertion that the advent of preparing cooked meals, not merely increasing amounts of meat consumed, is the genesis of the list of extraordinary traits our ancient ancestors acquired over the last 2 million years that eventually gave rise to us, Homo sapiens.

Drawing on a number of food studies, ethnographic data, as well as his own primatological research, Dr. Wrangham argues that the transition from Homo habilis to Homo erectus would be impossible without a regular supply of cooked food. Citing the general unpalatability and undigestibility of a chimp's diet for modern humans, the seeming energy deficit seen in raw food proponents, the chemical changes that occur in foods that are cooked and the subsequent absorption of the unlocked calories, and the increasing reduction of our early ancestors' gastrointestinal tract through the millennia, he is convinced that the utilization of fire for cooking has its origins much farther in the past than the current evidence from the archaeological record tells us. The discrepancy between the archaeological record and his claim is around 1 million years, an incredibly large gap to bridge. In the latter third of the book, Wrangham makes the tangential argument that cooking is also what spurred our cultural evolution, e.g., concepts such as pair-bonding and the sexual division of labor, through the creation of a sort of "protection racket" that guards women from food thieves and ensures men a ready supply of food.

While I did enjoy reading Dr. Wrangham's book and readily admit that he makes some interesting and valid points, I am not convinced of the veracity of his hypothesis, especially in the light of more recent research on the variability and actions of the microbiome present in the digestive tracts of animals. In presenting his case for the need of cooked food for an increased energy supply in late habilines/early erectus, he ignores the fact that much of the successive change in the musculoskeletal morphology leading to our species had the effect of allowing us to conserve energy through increased efficiency of movement.

This does not necessarily mean that Dr. Wrangham is incorrect. However, the gaps in his arguments, coupled with the gaps in our own knowledge, have effectively rendered the cooking hypothesis unfalsifiable. There very well may come a time when the available physical evidence supports his position, but for now the only appropriate response is one of interest, skepticism, and further research.

Definitely worth a read
By bill gonch
This is really a good book on an important topic that just does not get much coverage: the anthropology of food. Now, there are quite a few people who express theories on what made us human and what our distant ancestors ate. Wrangham is one of the few who combines the two topics.

Put briefly that major points of his argument are as follows. The emergence of humans in their modern form (still an imperfect work in progress. in my humble opinion) requires that we explain a couple of tricky things. One is the physiological changes that separate us from earlier species of hominid and from other primates. Another thing to be explained is the set of cultural changes. The thread Wrangham traces has to do with cooking as a central nexus.

Unfortunately, campfires do not fossilize well, so it is kind of hard to get comprehensive evidence. On the other hand, Wrangham cites good circumstantial evidence that the human mastery of fire (and with it cooking) started during the time of homo erectus, about 1.9 million years ago. One of the things that cooking does as increase the availability of nutrients in food. (It also makes it taste better). The connection Wrangham draws is enabled a process where are guts got smaller and our brains got bigger. The two are connected because the energy to power a bigger brain had to come from somewhere and most of the other organs in the body just could not be cut back by much. Cooking also has an inherent social component (or at least it did until we decided to outsource it to corporations), That provides a hook for the argument of cultural changes.

While anthropology is a science, it is a social science. I doubt it will ever be a science in the same sense as physics. Any argument like Wrangham's will always be vulnerable to the Gouldian argument of providing a "just so story." That said Wrangham provides us with a well researched argument and an extremely well written and interesting book. Strongly recommended.

Wonderful, Orignial, Must-Read
By Nathan White
I can't think of any better science writing than this. Truly an incredible accomplishment, Catching Fire is filled with incredibly thought-provoking ideas. I can tell that Richard Wrangham is fascinated by our early origins, if only by the incredible depth of his research for every chapter. Like the best of scientists, Wrangham argues firmly for a bold hypothesis by submitting it to harsh scrutiny. With every chapter he works into the details and consequences of cooking and fire, and his analyses show his keen observational skills and attention to detail present in all great scientists. The Epilogue comes as a wonderful surprise and reveals that in addition to scholarly research, the book is ultimately polemic. And after the beautifully crafted argument and delivery that precedes it, his points are impossible to ignore. In conclusion, WOW.

The Strange Case of the Rickety Cossack: And Other Cautionary Tales from Human Evolution, by Ian Tattersall

In his new book The Strange Case of the Rickety Cossack, human paleoanthropologist Ian Tattersall argues that a long tradition of "human exceptionalism" in paleoanthropology has distorted the picture of human evolution. Drawing partly on his own career-from young scientist in awe of his elders to crotchety elder statesman-Tattersall offers an idiosyncratic look at the competitive world of paleoanthropology, beginning with Charles Darwin 150 years ago, and continuing through the Leakey dynasty in Africa, and concluding with the latest astonishing findings in the Caucasus. The book's title refers to the 1856 discovery of a clearly very old skull cap in Germany's Neander Valley. The possessor had a brain as large as a modern human, but a heavy low braincase with a prominent brow ridge. Scientists tried hard to explain away the inconvenient possibility that this was not actually our direct relative. One extreme interpretation suggested that the preserved leg bones were curved by both rickets, and by a life on horseback. The pain of the unfortunate individual's affliction had caused him to chronically furrow his brow in agony, leading to the excessive development of bone above the eye sockets. The subsequent history of human evolutionary studies is full of similarly fanciful interpretations.

A survey with an agenda and a Good Read for paleoanthropology buffs
By j a haverstick
I’ve always had an interest in paleoanthropology and am old enough to have seen many of the breakthroughs of the last century and this. There are a finite number of books I’ll be reading before I go to sleep for good and so I try not to waste my time with the genre of science/biographies. But I heard Tattersall interviewed last Friday on the PBS program Science Friday and was interested enough to order this book, especially as he advertised himself as a bit of a rebel and was plugging the idea of Homo as a varied genus, sadly now represented by only one species, and not a natural progression to modern wo/man. It’s amazing how much of that medieval teleology still exists, maybe not in academic papers but in the general discourse, including that of science practitioners.

Well, this is sure a book loaded with personal recollections and private thoughts and details, but it wasn’t two pages in that I was hooked. Tattersall has a great style and a sharp and laconic wit. We meet guntoting teeniebop revolutionaries, claptrap airplanes and running out of beer in a hot climate before we’re on page five! Continuing in that vein would have made a great book. But although this is a first person account of pale anthropology of the last 60 or so years, it doers not rely only on colorful episodes. Tattersall has been at the heart of this discipline and his account is an account of how personalities and default assumptions have colored the field.

If you’re going to read this, you need a basic acquaintance with the recent (ca. 50 yrs.) players. I have that, but I was still hard put to put it all together into a coherent narrative: who said what in !972 and what another riposte was in 1999, etc. etc.

Let’s cut to th4 chase. Tattersall is very interested in the internecine wars about whether Homo is a large category or whether there are many species denied by the Unifiers. He thinks paleontologists are nave in the systematic of cladistics in general. If you don’t get what I’m saying, better think about buying this book twice.

He works this book around this theme. It is only 200 pages long and I read in two days and so can you if you are interested in the subject. There is a positive side to taking a huge mass of data and reducing it to “this or that’, and I very much appreciated Tattersall’s reduction. It made a lot of sense of what to me was perhaps unsorted information from many sources in the last half century. On the negative side, though, there was so much history presented in a pretty scanty way that it often seemed like reading a list. That’s why I’m taking a star off the review. I think that perhaps Tattersall could have presented his belief that not making hard and serious differentiations among the species of Homo and other hominids leads to Exceptionalist think ing about human beings could have been more sharply presented. Why exceptionalist thinking? Because looking at evolution working on just Homo in general suggests that this outcome (us) was a refinement rather than one outcome among many other possibilities.

I’m pretty much on the author’s side when it comes to the hard reality of species (in this context, anyhow). But even he admits at the end that species are “leaky”. When I was a boy I read that Plato thought that for every noun (Horse, Table, Neanderthal) there was an object. His friend Aristotle brought this down to earth opining that the world is arranged into Natural Kinds (horses, tables, Neanderthals) Couple of millenia later, William James suggested that our categories are something WE bring to our world to suit our purposes. I’m kind of with James here…if I had to choose. About Tattersall’s thinking that blurring the lines leads to exceptionalist, teleological mindset, I’d have to remark that this book is larded with references to the special and amazing character of human beings. Really? If ants could talk, they’d no doubt be talking about their own special and amazing qualities. But ants can’t talk , you say. No but humans can’t carry a hundred times their own weight and forming living bridges over rivers with their own bodies. Q.E.D.

A MUST READ for those interested in human evolution
By Nathan H Lents
I had the pleasure of reviewing this book for the Human Evolution Blog and interviewing the author:
http://thehumanevolutionblog.com/2015/06/23/a-conversation-with-ian-tattersall-about-his-new-book-the-strange-case-of-the-rickety-cossack-and-other-cautionary-tales-from-human-evolution/

This book is a history of the discipline of paleoanthropology, a close-up look at how the scientists approached the difficult task of making sense of the human fossil record that emerged painfully slow from the earth. While that may sound dry, the book is actually filled with drama! There are enormous egos, bitter disputes, grand but baseless claims, and even a shouting match on live television. It's not always an easy read, but well worth the effort.

This should be required reading of anthropology and paleontology students because of how it important it is to understand that roots and history of one's discipline, a point that Tattersall makes throughout the book. The take-home lesson for this for young scientists is, "Question everything," advice we could all do well to heed. Tattersall expressly rejects the tendency among scientists to exert authority in the face of dogmatic challenges and hide or minimize our own mistakes. Instead, the evidence should be carefully studied, cautiously interpreted, and, in the end, be allowed to speak for itself. There is also a strong call to remember that the evolutionary history of humans followed the same meandering path that other species have taken. Our history was not a steady march toward perfection and "we are the pinnacles of nothing," as he states in the final paragraph.

Nice Review of our History on this planet.
By VirgilCane
Thanks to Bruce Chatwin I've always had a passing interest in the origins of man. It was nice to get an updated version of what some paleoanthropologists agree on currently. Like the Brothers Karamazov this book started out a little slow. However unlike the Brothers K. it got better. I was interested to learn that when Potassium Argon dating was first used in 1950 the age of hominids went from an estimate of 600,000 years to 1.75 million years. Other interesting facts included that fire domestication was estimated at 1 million years ago and 2.5 million years ago stone tools marked a significant cognitive leap. Also around 1.8 million years ago the modern body form appeared and brain size began its remarkable increase. And the current form of homo sapiens appears to be about 190,000 years old. I was reminded of Roger Water's concept album where the aliens come to earth and piece together what happened to us, "We watched the tragedy unfold. We did as we were told we bought and sold. It was the greatest show on earth. But then it was over. We oohed and aahed We drove our racing cars. We ate our last few jars of caviar. And somewhere out there in the stars A keen-eyed look-out Spied a flickering light Our last hurrah And when they found our shadows Grouped 'round the TV sets They ran down every lead They repeated every test They checked out all the data in their lists And then the alien anthropologists Admitted they were still perplexed But on eliminating every other reason For our sad demise They logged the only explanation left This species has amused itself to death."

As seen on Fox & Friends

How One Man Took On The State Department and Won

Nick Adams had it all: charisma, energy, a promising TV career, a new organization and an approved Green Card petition. The world was at his feet.

Then came the unexpected sabotage and political persecution from one individual. It began a spiral of destruction – finances, family, health and career. He almost lost it all.

Green Card Warrior is an explosive and startling expos into the world of legal immigration and what many must endure to come to America.

Rising conservative star Nick Adams reveals how he was persecuted by the Obama Administration, and offers an incisive critique of the immigration system – both legal and illegal.

This eye-opening account shows how the Obama Administration has broken new ground in its intimidation and harassment of political opponents, now using its State Department to screen and select immigrants based on their politics.

In Green Card Warrior, Adams recounts his personal tale, setting it against the larger story of the broken legal immigration system, and unfairness of illegal immigration in America today.

Just reading what Nick went through to get his Green Card is unbelievable. Just because one person didn't like his stand against the "Left". This type of behavior is outrageous, unacceptable, and un-American. It must end now. Time to make America great again!!!

An Encouragement and Exhortation that should be read by all
By Michael David Clarke
This is a terrific 90-minute read. You'll no longer take America for granted--and you'll learn plenty about this great nation in the process.
I, too, immigrated to the US and also on an L1A visa. Nick's journey was very similar to ours--a legal immigrant abiding by all the rules is met with profound mediocrity from multiple levels of bureaucrats charged with the decision-making authority of who can )and can't) become an American. Tens of thousands of dollars, too many lawyers, and way too much time. Like Nick, we too were clearly "outed" by low-level immigration officials for our conservative Christian worldview.
Nick makes a great contrast between America's current immigration challenges and the conspiratorial effort by some to keep law-abiding patriots out.
My favorite theme was Nick's unapologetic challenge toward American exceptionalism. Let's stop saying we're sorry to the world and start to remind them why America is the greatest country in the history of the world!
God bless Nick Adams and God bless America.

The Fate of the Kingdom Awaits the Cast of Stones

In the backwater village of Callowford, roustabout Errol Stone is enlisted by a church messenger arriving with urgent missives for the hermit priest in the hills. Eager for coin, Errol agrees to what he thinks will be an easy task, but soon finds himself hunted by deadly assassins. Forced to flee with the priest and a small band of travelers, Errol soon learns he's joined a quest that could change the fate of his kingdom.

Protected for millennia by the heirs of the first king, the kingdom's dynasty nears its end and the selection of the new king begins--but in secret and shadow. As danger mounts, Errol must leave behind the stains and griefs of the past, learn to fight, and discover who is hunting him and his companions and how far they will go to stop the reading of the stones.

"With an engaging, imaginative world that bristles with danger, characters that keep you guessing, and a story that sticks with you, A Cast of Stones will keep you devouring pages until the very end. I highly recommend it!"--John W. Otte, author of Failstate

"Carr's debut, the first in a series, is assured and up-tempo, with much to enjoy in characterization and description--not least the homely, life-as-lived details."--Publishers Weekly

"This fast-paced fantasy debut set in a medieval world is a winner. Both main and secondary characters are fully drawn and endearing, and Errol's transformation from drunkard to hero is well plotted. Carr is a promising CF author to watch. Fans of epic Christian fantasies will enjoy discovering a new voice."--Library Journal

"[Good fantasy books] have to be excellent. Good storytelling and exceptional characters with circumstances that are easy enough to follow and wrap your brain around but keep you entertained and guessing... A Cast of Stones has found itself firmly in that list of books. I absolutely, one hundred percent loved this book." --Radiant Lit

By Wolfe Moffat
When it comes to fiction, especially in the realm of Fantasy, I think that it isn't always the easiest to come by. Marcher Lord Press produces some of the best, while seasoned writers such as George R.R. Martin continue to make impressive marks, always impressing readers. I was quite intrigued to see that there was a new man in town by the name of Patrick W. Carr. But I wondered if he would be impressive. Well, he's impressed the likes of Jill Williamson and John Otte, 2 Marcher Lord Press masterminds praise this man's work, and I was extremely eager to see what Carr had to offer. I wasn't disappointed in the least!

Stumbling drunk, barely able to function, is how we meet the boy, Errol Stone, as he is kicked out of a tavern. Not the most of impressive introductions, is it? Well, Errol probably doesn't think himself so impressive either. But he is sent on a mission, with the promise of payment, as long as he delivers a message to a priest, because he knows how to reach this priest, and he's proved that he's rather quick through the woods and paths. It isn't too long before Errol finds himself being followed, hunted, and wanted. Why? The answer is soon discovered!

This boy, who doubts his own self-worth, discovers talents that he never knew existed, and from those talents, royalty will be addressed. Errol quickly learns how to fight, and while easily challenged, never forgotten by those who oppose him. And with the ability to exceed all expectations, it seems that this boy, who only in the beginning, wanted a drink, is learning a thing or two about himself.

This past Summer, I happened to read "The Word and the Void" trilogy by Terry Brooks, and as experienced as Brooks may be, he isn't nearly as impressive as Patrick W. Carr. This new author isn't afraid to lay it all on the line, and let it all hang out! Let me tell you something, with writing like this, his writing is going to be in demand for years to come! If you aren't breaking down doors to read Carr, then you are truly missing out. So don't miss out! This guy's worth your reading time. And he's going to be on my list for a long time coming.

Nice try, but horrible ending!! This is NOT the way to write good fantasy fiction!
By S. Walker
I was intrigued to read a medieval fantasy story written for the Christian market. It was the author's first novel so I cut him some slack when some elements of the story didn't line up.

I've read a lot of fantasy fiction, some of the best. The story line was good. I appreciate that the author stayed with a single point of view throughout. That provided continuity to the story since it had so many sub-plots in the developmental stage. It kept it less confusing that way. You also got a glimpse into the "coming of age" part of growth in the main character. I actually enjoyed reading most of the book.

However, I WILL NOT read anymore from this series or probably even this author: When you write a trilogy, you do not stop the book in the MIDDLE of the climatic scene and then pretend it didn't happen! I have never felt such a shock of being dropped in a bucket of ice water as I did when I finished chapter 31 and started chapter 32. It was AWFUL!!! This is not the way a trilogy of books is written. You finish the primary story line well so that your readers are satisfied ... and then you leave enough open doors of possibility that make your reader what to know what happens next. You had plenty of open doors to use - and you touched on them in chapter 32 and the epilogue. BUT PLEASE - DO NOT EVER STOP THE STORY IN SUCH A SHOCKING WAY. It is painful and disappointing. It is not building the tension - it is the opposite of that. I actually double checked the Table of Contents in my Kindle app TWICE to make sure I hadn't missed a chapter - it was that bad.

Bethany House - I hold you responsible for this. Your editors should know better - that's their job. Perhaps the deadlines were so tight that mistakes were made ... I don't know. But this leaves a really BAD aftertaste and a black mark on the emerging fantasy fiction arising from the Christian market. It had such potential. I hope you do better and learn from this mistakes. I wish you well.

A fun ride, but ultimately forgettable
By Singularity
I will say that I enjoyed this novel and the series as a whole while I read them, but they are altogether too cookie-cutter to stay with me. The characters develop as one would expect fantasy characters to develop, the plot proceeds as one would expect the plot to proceed, the twists are the twists that I expected, etc, etc. The book is simply too predictable. I finished the series a week ago, and already I can barely remember what it was about.

The author creates an interesting world and it seems as if he attempted to make interesting characters, but while the characters are mostly flawed and not entirely stereotypical, they are non-stereotypical in stereotypical ways. For instance, the "princess" character takes an interest to swordfighting, and the "priest" character is pretty fond of his food. Somehow, the author's characters manage to be both stereotypical and non-stereotypical at once, fulfilling modern fantasy tropes, if not traditional ones.

I should say that I'm an atheist, and never once was I offended by the supposed "Christian" nature of the novel. The book does deal heavily with faith, but it never seemed preachy. However, the author does seem overly invested in minutiae of theological debate, as with the nature of the deity Aurae, which is evidently a major plot point, but one whose purpose I pretty much missed.

Lastly, while the author's writings style is generally strong, it really started annoying me halfway through the third book. Let's just say that the author's characters are really really emotional. Tears are shed, jaws are dropped, hearts are fluttered, by many, very often, repeatedly.

All in all, I did enjoy the books. They were fun while they lasted. But these are not great works of literature. They will not surprise you, they will not move you, and they will not stay with you. This is a 10 dollar bottle of wine type of book, neither cheap/bad nor worth savoring.

Fantastic book! I got a new camera like many and didn't have a clue what to do with all its features. I didn't even know what aperture or shutter meant, generally speaking. This book is for the beginner. It reads in such a way that it reaches out to you and holds your attention. The Author is great at keeping clear and understandable. You can't go wrong with this book if you are truly interested in finding more out about the camera you don't often use.

Great summary of how to use a camera - the only thing it's missing is some advice on composition.
