About the Author
Born in a small town in Ohio, Oliver published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of twenty-eight. Over the course of her long career, she has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has led workshops and held residencies at various colleges and universities, including Bennington College, where she held the Catharine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching. Oliver currently lives in Florida.

Lots of Felicity & Charm

If you ever wondered how Mary Oliver perceives poems, she tells you in this book on Felicity fittingly in a poem:

That pretty little beast, a poem,
has a mind of its own.
Sometimes I want it to crave apples
but it wants red meat.
Sometimes I want to walk peacefully
on the shore
and it wants to take off all its clothes
and dive in.

Sometimes I want to use small words
and make them important
and it starts shouting the dictionary,
the opportunities.

Sometimes I want to sum up and give thanks,
putting things in order
and it starts dancing around the room
on its four furry legs, laughing
and calling me outrageous.

But sometimes, when I'm thinking about you,
and no doubt smiling,
it sits down quietly, one paw under its chin,
and just listens.

This is one of my favorite poems in this winsome collection. It gives you a spirit of the book ~ lots of felicity and charm.

is not that the way of love? Brief moments

Yes, the book is short. But then, Mary Oliver's work always leaves me wishing there was just one more poem.

Yes, the poems themselves are brief. But then, is not that the way of love? Brief moments, snatches of time we etch into our hearts with permanent ink. Only later do we realize that the ink may have been permanent but the pages wear thin and disappear. We are left with savored fragments, like the simplicity of the "gesture of your hand reaching for me."

Yes, I was surprised when I realized I had reached the end. But as her poems remind us, "Things take the time they take. Don't worry." "It's mostly attitude. I'm certain I'll see something." Their brevity allows our hearts to "remember, remember."

And so five stars and a bow, "All I know is that 'thank you' [Mary Oliver] should appear somewhere. So, just in case I can't find the perfect place- 'Thank you, thank you.'"

Mary Oliver - Please Keep Writing the Journey is not Over Yet

It is not an over exaggeration to say ...I l adore Mary Oliver. I was fortunate enough to hear her read here in Seattle some years ago and I fell in love with her poetry right on the spot and in a way her. Reading her work is like taking a walk with a friend through the woods or having a conversation about "Maybe" for hours. I will read every book she ever writes, we have journeyed together over the years and we both have changed and I have seen her changing in her writing...she has not noticed mine at all...of course I have never had the chance to tell her, and what importance would it be to her? It will be just a secret between me and the rest of the reviewers.

"It is not my intention to give away the plot," Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., announces near the beginning of Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "but I think I die at the end. They've given me less than two hours." For two hours, this famed Donne scholar takes center stage, interrupting her doctors, nurses, and students to explicate her own story, its metaphors and conceits. Recently diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer, she is being treated with an experimental drug cocktail administered in "eight cycles. Eight neat little strophes." The chemo makes her feel worse than she ever thought possible; in fact, the treatment is making her sick, not the disease--an irony she says she'd appreciate in a Donne sonnet, if not so much in life.

The most powerful play I've seen/read in years

I bought and read the play after seeing it performed twice by Judith Light, once off-Broadway and once regionally in Washington, D.C. I believe one would find the play equally powerful without having seen it. Perhaps because Margaret Edson never had formal training as a playwright, no one told her what she "shouldn't" do, and as a result, Wit is a brilliant, searing, *unique* vision of how a woman's mind becomes sharper and more insightful even as her body deteriorates. The character of Dr. Vivian Bearing reminded me a lot of Maria Callas in "Master Class" (at least, as rendered on stage); both are strong, imperious characters who draw you into their confidence while challenging you to keep up. And it's a relief to find a play that doesn't talk down to its readers/viewers, and actually contains, for instance, a lecture on a Donne sonnet -- which, incredibly, moves the action forward. After reading or seeing the play, you feel emotionally drained but energized.
I'm both a cancer patient and a playwright, and I can only hope that I'm able to produce as eloquent and powerful a work as Margaret Edson has given us.

What Not To Do and Why To Do It Anyway

Playwright Margaret Edson does everything in this play that playwrighting and directing teachers tell their students not to do. She speaks in jargon. She breaks the fourth wall. She demands a hefty cast. She's digressive.
Yet the play, both in performance and as literature, is compelling. This play, in the great expressionist style, creates a world as seen through the eyes of only one character. Events unfold from a distinct point of view that is made comprehensible to us by allowing that POV to address us apart from stage events.
Edson, a literature graduate and former oncology ward worker, is knowledgeable about the topics that inform this play: classic poetry and cancer. The connection between the metaphysical lyrics of John Donne and the imminent mortality of uterine cancer provide a smooth harmony in the character of Dr. Vivian Bearing. Thematically and structurally, this play has the theatrical elements that make playwrights from Sophocles to Strindburg to Sam Shepard writers of great significance.
This isn't to say the play is easy to stage. Scene shifts take place without a pause to let actors get their feet. Our narrator gets a pelvic exam in full view of the audience. Supporting characters double on the fly, and lead characters have to change ages from scene to scene. At the final moments, our narrator appears in front of us as naked as the day she was born.
But these difficult elements contribute to the great meaning that is this play. Without these trials, the production wouldn't touch us in the same way. We need these almost offensive structural components to understand what the narrator must endure.
This play is difficult to read, difficult to stage, difficult to watch. Yet the things that make it difficult make it most ultimately rewarding. A modern classic from a forward-thinking mind.

Great play

Dr. Vivian Bearing is renowned throughout the literary world for her expertise on John Donne's seventh century Holy Sonnets. The professor enjoys teaching at the University, but not as much as she relishes a rational analysis of Donne's brilliant work.
However, the fiftyish Vivian soon learns that she suffers from late stage ovarian cancer. The University medical research staff provide her a rare opportunity to receive special experimental treatment. She soon finds herself feeling sicker from the "cure" than the disease even as she discovers that it is simpler to learn than to teach. As Vivian goes through the eight stage process, she begins to appreciate the Donne sonnets as simple works of art by a great metaphysical poet, and not just intellectual fodder to be ripped asunder by English teachers like her.
W;T is an incredible play that forces the audience (reader or attendee) to evaluate ones values. The main theme is brutally honest yet done in a humorous, thought provoking manner. Margaret Edson provides one of the top plays of the decade as it leaves everyone agreeing it deserved the Pulitzer it won. This play (in book or theater form) needs to be experienced to understand the emotions its generates. Great work by a master playwright.

How We Store Our Food Tells Us A Lot About Ourselves

This is a great read. Part technical history, part cultural commentary. Rees shows us how our refrigerators (starting with the ice box) shape how we approach eating and how different cultural approaches to eating (across time, across countries) influence the design of this ubiquitous household item. Filled with surprising anecdotes and facts, this book will be compelling to anyone interested in how we got to how we live now.

Self-Paced Learning Guide on Key Candlestick Patterns

Steve Nison, CMT, the author of two previous volumes on candlesticks, and an educator, trader, and seminar speaker, has written a basic workbook on the fundamentals of candlestick charting and how to interpret and use only the most significant patterns. I attended one of his Nison's candlestick workshops at an investor expo, as well as reviewed his video and found them to be excellent educational vehicles.
This book is for those individuals who like to read about certain candlestick characteristics, and then test themselves on their level of understanding. Each chapter begins with a bullet-pointed list of learning objectives and key terms to watch for. It then explains the concept, shows examples, provides highlighted key points, and then provides review questions, and detailed answers. In most all of the chapters, the review questions and answers take up more pages than the explanation of the candlestick pattern or the concept being taught. So, this is more of an instructional and teacher-student approach to the subject.
One chapter entitled "Progressive Charting" is about 50 pages long and contains a walk-through of an unfolding market scenario, a few candles at a time using 88 annotated charts. The purpose of this approach is to help the reader interpret each candle or pattern in a real market situation and learn from his/her experience.
The last chapter entitled "Bringing It Altogether" asks you 42 questions about candlestick charting and provides the detailed answers. This allows the reader to determine his/her level of understanding and areas for further study. The book contains a short "visual" glossary illustrating candlestick patterns.
For readers who are avid students and like to work through numerous exercises and examples of the basics of candlesticks, this book will serve their needs well. For other investors who want more "meat" and detailed information and explanation, then I would recommend Nison's "Beyond Candlesticks" instead.

Outstanding book! A must have for any technical trader

I'm reading this book now and it's amazing how much you can learn in so short a time. This is a small book but the information and the way it's presented is outstanding. I wish all of the books that required study put their material in this format. Each section has a quiz to determine that you understand the material. Not only that but detailed answers to each of the questions is included. You're getting double re-enforced learning. While it starts with the basics of candlesticks the book concludes with real examples of applying these patterns. What's really the kicker is that Steve shows how he integrates Western charting techniques with candlesticks to greatly improve the odds in trading.
I don't expect to be a trading wizard after reading through this book but I do expect my trades will be thought out more thoroughly with the right techniques.
Get this book even if you don't use candle charts now.

Shooting Stars and Belt Holds and Dark Cloud Cover

This is a great basic primer on candlestick charting techniques by the guy who allegedly introduced it into the west fifteen years ago. All the basic one, two, and three formations from spinning tops and high wave candles to piercing lines and cloud covers to three soldiers, harami cross and evening doji stars are there. It is pretty amazing that candlesticks are so much simpler but contain more information than standard western tick and point-and-figure charts. Among the things I learned were that hammers must have shadows twice as long as the real body, and the way windows (gaps) are used for support in Japanese trading. The book is arranged with quizzes, and while repetive (and there are a couple of minor mistakes, including on one of the questions), Nisson really drives home the message. Among the things he emphasizes are that candlesticks are best for signaling reversals, and that they are best supplemented by western techniques for price targets and confirmation. Although not quite a complete novice, I'm a slow reader but it only took me three hours to read this in the library. The last part of the book takes you through a chart and points out the formations-dispelling the common critique that technical analysis is completely subjective. Highly recommended and quite a contrast to the information overload of many other trading books.
